I jolted awake as the apartment door shut. I got up checking the time on my phone. He was out until midnight! I scrambled into the living room wiping sleep from my eyes.
"Why so late?" I asked as he froze looking toward me. My lips parted seeing a bruise forming by his eye along with a split lip. "What happened?" I rushed forward to get a better look at the damage.
"I thought I would track the vampire who turned you," Tyler said as I stiffened.
"How did you figure out who?" I asked softly.
"You weren't grabbed by accident Ash. Some powerful vampires ordered you to be turned and Blake managed to find a paper trail about that," Tyler said as I sat on the couch.
"But why?" I asked as he sat beside me. "What good could come from turning me?"
"One coven decided to find the descendants of the first hunters and turn them. I don't know what their reason for that but for whatever reason they thought turning you would ease the hunter threat," Tyler said as I ran my fingers through my hair. Not only was I pretending to be a hunter but now I have to worry about a coven of vampires finding out I'm no longer a vampire.
"That's just great," I snapped as Tyler went to get an ice pack. "Did you at least kill them?"
"Unfortunately they had a lot more help than I thought. I barely got away," Tyler said as he pressed the cold pack to his face.
"We will deal with the vampires later," I muttered getting to my feet. I walked into the kitchen grabbing a bag of chips out of the cupboard. I ate a few chips while Tyler stood beside me. "You should have told me about this a long time ago."
"I know and I'm sorry," Tyler whispered.
"We should work together next time," I said firmly as he nodded wrapping his arms around my waist. "Your Dad is my partner just so you know." Tyler raised an eyebrow as I leaned against him.
"When did this happen?" He asked me.
"My mom and I discussed me joining the hunters yesterday and she thought he was a good choice for my partner since you already have a partner to work with," I said simply. "I'm starting my first real day today since I proved to him yesterday I could fight a vampire."
"When is my dad coming to pick you up?" He asked softly holding back a laugh.
"In a little bit so I need to get ready," I sighed slipping from his arms. I grabbed skin tight black leather pants and a white tank top pulling them on. I put my black leather jacket on zipping it up halfway. My white sneakers didn't make a single sound as I headed outside. My blonde hair flowed behind me as I sat down on the steps. I waited patiently for Mr. Walsh to arrive. I watched his car park in front of me. I jogged over to the car getting into the passenger seat. "So what's the plan for today?"
"Today we are taking out a coven of vampires," Mr. Walsh said driving down the road. We reached an abandoned building getting out of the car. I looked around us to see no one outside and no signs of life inside the building. Mr. Walsh handed me a cross and a stake. "Keep these on you at all times."
"Is there a specific way you want to do this?" I asked him.
"We have to split up," Mr. Walsh said softly.
"Okay," I said reluctantly. I didn't enjoy the thought of facing whatever we find potentially by myself. I headed into the building masking the fear filling my body. I walked upstairs to clear the second floor while Mr. Walsh continued to walk around the first level. I crept along the wall careful not to make even a small noise though I knew surprising a vampire was difficult. I noticed every room was empty with no signs of someone living there. I reached the last room and heard voices inside. I gripped the cross tightly before kicking the door open. My lips parted as five pairs of vampire eyes locked onto me.
"Inexperienced hunter I see," the female smirked as she strode toward me while the other vampires laughed.
"I'm experienced enough to kill you," I spat as she ran toward me using her vampire speed. She ripped the cross from my grasp before hitting me with it. Her skin sizzled until she dropped the cross on the dirty floor. A thin cut trailed across my cheek from the cross. I dodged her next blow while her friends jumped out a window. "Are you so cocky that you sent them away?"
"A little human can't stop me," she said firmly before throwing me across the room as if I was nothing. My body smacked against the unyielding wall. Pain radiated across my body as I slid down to the floor. The vampire crouched down next to me with a sick grin on her face. "This is the problem with humans, so weak and fragile you don't stand a chance." My hand wrapped around my stake before I plunged the wood into the vampire's chest. Her eyes widened moments before she turned to a pile of ash.
I winced as I got to my feet. I wrapped an arm around my waist as I limped over to the stairs. As I stood at the top of the stairs I wondered why Mr. Walsh didn't come upstairs when he heard me hit the wall. I descended the stairs freezing when my eyes found him on the ground. I ignored my pain as I raced over to him. I saw blood all over the floor beneath him as his eyes stared blankly past me. I grabbed his wrist trying to find a pulse but there wasn't one. I didn't get along with Mr. Walsh but I couldn't bring myself to feel glad he died at the hands of a vampire. I hated the hunters and wanted to bring them down but this somehow felt wrong.
