As Lizzie's video finished on YouTube, it was getting close to 12:30pm. I pulled myself up and looked at my face. I redid my hair quickly then started going downstairs.
Most of the children were already there when I got down. They were all really excited and jumping around all over the place. I sat down on the sofa and waited for Mrs Thomas to make her announcement. Thankfully, Lauren and Eva hadn't seen me yet.
"Right, children. In half an hour the couple should be here. I will be taking them on a tour of the orphanage before they begin to meet you all. You should all wait in here for me to call you into the office. Then you will get to talk to the couple and see if you fit with them. You may want to bring something down to entertain you while you wait for your turn. Everyone get that?"
"Yes, miss!" We all said.
"Good. If you want something to entertain yourself, I suggest you go and get it now." She smiled.
I didn't know what I could take. There was no way I was watching YouTube while everyone was around me. I ran upstairs and looked around my room. I found the drawing of Lizzie and Joel I had been working on which I thought I could finish. I grabbed my pencils and headed back downstairs.
I sat in the main room, keeping quiet on a beanbag in the corner. I heard Mrs Thomas come in and she called in Lily, a six year old with a lot of energy. I continued my drawing while she was gone and luckily, no one seemed to be paying much attention to me. I watched Lily come back in, and desperately hoped it wasn't me who would be chosen next.
"Right, Katelyn, are you ready?" Mrs Thomas said.
I sighed and headed out the room with my drawing clutched tightly in my hand. There was no way I was going to let any of them see that.
"Don't scare them off, weirdo!" Eva shouted.
The office was at the back of the orphanage, through the kitchen. It seemed to take forever, but it can't have been longer than a minute. When I got there, Mrs Thomas told me to leave my things out there with her while I went in. I was about to open the door when Mrs Thomas pulled me back.
"You might want to take this in with you," she said, passing me my notebook and winking.
Who could've been in there?
