Short Story👫

Lacey lived in downtown Seattle in a pretty sad apartment. It was a dingy one bedroom, with a clear view of the apartment in the next building.

She was 19 years old, and attending the local college to get a degree in art. She had very long wavy blond hair, a collection of freckles, and blue-gray eyes that matched the Seattle sky.

Unlike what most would think, her favorite thing about her little apartment was in fact the easy access to the apartment next door. This wasn't because she loved people-watching the neighbors, or definitely not because she liked to sneak in to steal things. It was because of the boy living there. Cheesy, I know.

The boy was also 19, but attending a different college than Lacey. His name was Jordan. He had cheekbones to cut glass, almost black dark green eyes, and oh-so-touchable light brown hair. He was one of those romantic and edgy boys people write about, and Lacey loved him for it.

Lacey was only 17 when she moved out on her own to escape her messed up family. Jordan had moved into his own apartment only a few months back. He lived with his older brother, but Lacey didn't know much about him. She had never gone to Jordan's apartment, he'd only come to hers.

This was because they never had a chance to plan out dates or anything. Jordan would just climb across to her apartment and surprise her, never giving her a warning. In all honesty, she didn't mind. It made her feel all warm and comforted to walk into her room to see him laying there waiting.

When they first met, they had at first only sat on their window sills discussing music, video games, or the trading little known facts about themselves. When it rained, which it did often in Washington, they each held a little umbrella over their heads as they perched.

When they grew closer, Jordan would climb across cautiously, but over time he felt comfortable being suspended 7 stories up for seconds at a time and would swing across recklessly. They would lay on Lacey's bed listening to music, sharing headphones, and play horror games on her xbox. Sometimes she would disconnect her headphones from her phone and plug it into a stereo instead, and blast the music throughout the apartment. They'd dance around and slip on the hardwood floors in socks. She'd slip across the kitchen floor, and Jordan would catch her by her waist before throwing her into a spin.

One summer night, they crept up onto the awning roof above Lacey's window. They lay there on a throw blanket from Jordan's living room, sharing sour patch kids and just talking. It was that night they shared their first kiss.

After that it was sealed. They would reach their arms out their windows to clasp hands, and pull each other into a kiss. They'd fall asleep together in Lacey's bed after staying up until 5 am watching horror movies and the occasional chick flick (these were by Jordan's request, by the way. He was a sucker for them.)

Sometimes on a rare occasion they'd abandon their homes and skateboard around Seattle. They'd go side-by-side, holding hands, and every once and a while stumble off their boards. They'd visit the skate park or their favorite coffee place, and spend hours just wandering the streets. They'd abandon their boards and just carry them, instead walking along at a lazy pace.

Lacey and Jordan had one of those fairy tale romances people longed for and envied them because of. It was one of those loves that when you see your significant other your heart swells, and you feel like you're floating. However, it was also one of those rare loves where you and your partner are so alike there's never any fighting, just strong, undying love.

The two teenagers were undeniably, happily, powerfully infatuated with each other. They were both so happy you could hate them for it. They were in their own little world together, passing through their lives side by side like it was a slow moving river.
