Cally's pov
After my first ever day inside the Maze, Minho and I had made our way to the kitchen. We sat on a table together with Alby, where we started devouring the baked potatoes. I was tired, every mussel in my body hurt. I really wanted to be a Runner, and I don't want to stop. But I didn't think it would be so damn exhausting. Compared to this, street running was child's play.
Alby and Minho were talking, I think it was about some of the Builders, but I didn't really pay them a lot of attention. I was poking into the few beans I had left on my plate while trying to arrange my thoughts.
Even though I had been in the Glade for quite some time now, it still felt surreal. Especially now I've also been inside the Maze. I mean the Maze itself! When I watched the movie for the first time, I had been so happy I wasn't trapped and forced to run around in between those creepy old walls infested with those terrifying, bioengeneared freaks of nature. But now? It was going to be part of my daily routine.
Out of nowhere, something flashed across my field of vision. Not knowing what it was, I immediately shot back, grabbing the table to keep myself from falling off my seat.
"Wow, Cally, calm down." Alby said througg a laugh as he saw that Minho had been able to startle me by only waving his hand in front of my face.
"In which universe were you, Greenie?" Minho asked.
I relaxed again when I rralized there wasn't any danger and leaned my head on my arm, which was lying on the table. "One with dragons and sparkly sugar trees."
My remark got me weird looks from Minho and Alby. "You sure you're not jacked in the head?" Minho asked me with a raised eyebrow.
I smiled at him as I got up from the table, "I never said I wasn't, Pretty boy." I petted him on the head before walking away. I was done being social for today, I was tired and just wanted to get some rest. Away from people.
And of course, the moment I walked out of the Homestead, I got tackled by my favorite dog in existence. She ran at me and jumped against my leg, the sudden weight making me fall back against the wooden wall of the building. I groaned from the pain on the back of my head. But Bark didn't seem to notice, she was too busy licking my face.
"Oh my God, Bark, you little monster." I said laughing while petting her.
"You okay?" I heard a voice, I couldn't see who it was, but when I had pushed Bark off of me, I saw it was Gally. The black haired boy stuck out his hand to help me up, which I accepted.
"Yes. Yeah, I'm fine," I said as I knocked some dirt from my pants. "You're doing better, I see."
Gally nodded once, clearly not knowing why he had started to have a small talk conversation with me of all people. "Yep, I started working again."
"Not too much, I hope, you're body needs to get used to it again."
"Ow, slim it, Greenie. You're not a Med-jack, so don't act like one."
I still couldn't place if Gally was annoyed or just messing with me; so I just smiled a bit awkwardly. "Yeah... I guess I just can't help it, so you'll have to deal with it."
There grew a small smile on Gally's face, it lasted less than a second, but it was there.
"Hey, umm.." Gally started, "I umm... I wanted to thank you. For... you know." It sounded like saying it actually physically hurt him. But knowing this was as sincere as it would become, I smiled at him.
"You're welcome."
Gally gave a small smile back, "Well, I'm heading inside," he said.
I nodded, "okay, well, see you around."
Freaking finally, time alone. Well, with my little doggo, but that's fine. We should go to the Deadheads before someone else wants to-
Aaand of course. Before I had even finished my thoughts, Newt came out of the Map-room. He waved at me and jogged over, his light hair stuck to his neck with sweat. Ow God, please don't start about last night... please don't...
"Hey Cals, was Gally botterin' ya?"
"What? No, he just thanked me."
Newt seemed to not really believe it, "Gally... thanked you?" He repeated.
"Yes, Gally thanked me. I think it cost him more effort than cutting down a tree with a butter knife, but he did."
My words earned me a snicker from Newt. Somehow, it eased the tension I was feeling.
"Never thought I would hear that," he said with a bit of disbelief in his voice.
"Anyway, did ya have a good run?"
"Yep," I let the p plop. "I'm exhausted, but fine. How about you?"
Newt let out a short huff, his shoulders sinking a little for a moment. "It was fine, nothin' special. But everythin' went well with ya guys? No Grievers?"
I shooke my head, "Nope. No Grievers, just walls covert in ivy with some Beetle blades on them."
"Okay, well, good." And with that, Newt seemed to be satisfied. "I'm gonna eat, ya comin' with?"
I shook my head, "I already ate, and to be honest. I'm kinda done being around all those people. I'm heading for the Deadheads with Bark. At least there it's quieter than everywhere else in the Glade."
Newt nodded that he understood, "Well, good luck avoiding everyone. See ya later."
I smiled at him as I started walking away, "thanks Newton."
