Newt's pov
I was sitting beside Cally's bed, in the corner between the bed beside her bed and the wall. I must have fallen asleep, because the next thing I knew is that I opened my eyes after hearing Cally's voice.
It was dark all around me, tipping me off it was passed midnight. At first I thought it were just more senseless sounds, until I listened closer and was able to make out words. Sentences even.
"Let me stay." Cally mumbled. I stood up, thinking she had woken up, but she hadn't. Her eyes were still closed as she continued to push the words passed her lips in ways that didn't make sense to me.
"I don't want to leave yet... I'm not done..." After that she stopped mumbling and tossing and turning. In the dark it was hard to make out anything, but I could see she had opened her eyes. For a moment she just stared at the ceiling, but then she tried to get up.
Quickly I placed my hand on her shoulder and slowly pressed her back down. Knowing she shouldn't get up already. "Slow down, Cals."She stared at me, not saying anything. Probably trying to wrap her head around everything "Ya need to rest. Don't get up too quickly." I said gently, not wanting to upset her any more than she probably already was.
"I'm fine," she said eventually, her voice sounding scratchy of the screaming from the past days. "Is this real?" She started, "am I awake again?"
I sat down on the chair beside her bed and smiled at her, gently stroking some hair behind her ear, letting my hand linger a little. Bloody hell I was so happy she was awake again. So happy I almost missed the change in her posture. Her eyes grew wider, her body started to shake. My throat clenched with worry. "It's okay, Cally." I tried to sound as calm and reassuring as I could. "It's real. The Changing is over. Ya made it through. You are safe."
"It's over..." Cally mumbled to me or to herself, I wasn't sure. I wanted to wrap her into my arms and hold her close to me until she stopped shaking, until she felt safe again. But before I could do anything else, Cally snatched my hand away from her face. The sudden movement started me. A little jolt of pain shooting through my body at her rejection of my touch.
"Aren't you supposed to sleep?" I didn't know how to respond at first, but knowing I had to keep it together for her I forced a smile.
"I wanted to make sure you would be alright."
"That's sweet... " Cally mumbled, swallowing. At this point it was hard to miss the tears in her eyes, even as she avoided looking at me. "But still... I'm awake now, so you should go to bed."
"Cally-"
"Just go!" The raw anger in her voice made me flinch. I should've known... all the other Shanks that woke up from the Changing reacted similar... angry... afraid... It had been stupid to think Cally would be andy different. Still, I was ashamed to admit how much it hurt. To myself, at least.
I pulled myself back together. Wiping the hurt off my face as I forced another smile at her. "Yes ma'm." With that, I got up and walked out of the room.
As I closed the door behind me I looked down at Bark, who was sleeping in front of the door. I knelt down and petted her on her head, Bark opened her eyes and looked up to me.
"She's awake," I whispered to her. My voice trembled a little bit as I processed all the emotions that went through me. But I quickly focused on the most important part, "Cally's okay, Bark." Bark looked at me, making me realize I was talking to a shug dog. It was just an animal, not capable of responding or actually understanding anything I was saying. I didn't understand why Cally kept doing it.
I got up again and wanted to walk to my room when I heard something. It came out of the Med-room. Muffled screaming. Cally.
All the alarms went off in my head, I reached for the doorknob- and hesitated. The harsh way she told me to go fresh on my mind. She wanted to be alone, but leaving her was so bugging hard when I could hear her scream just behind this door...
For a moment I just stood there, until the scream got turned into a coughing fit, followed by... sobs. Of course, she would be crying. Every Shank that ever went through the Changing got out all messed up. I wanted to help her but had to stop myself from walking back in again. I wasn't stupid, I knew Cally wanted to be alone. Probably exactly to let it all out.
Bark pressed her nose against my hand, making me look at her. Her big brown eyes looked at me as if she were trying to tell me something.
"Yeah, I know, we should go the her..." I said to Bark. Okay, maybe I do get why she does it.
Against better judgement I opened the door. "Cally?" I could hear her inhale sharply and stop crying immediately. I opened the door a little wider with the intention to go inside, but Bark rushed by my legs. When the dog reached her, I could hear Cally laugh.
"Hey, Barky! hey girly!" She said with a shaky voice as she petted the dog, whose tail was waking fast from side to side, trying to lick Cally's face. Cally didn't seem to mind at all, though, she was laughing and rubbing Bark's head between her hands.
Maybe I don't need to do anything after all... I thought when I looked at them. I slowly backed up and closed the door. She'll be fine. I thought as I walked to my own room. Careful I opened the door, trying not to wake Minho. As I lay down on my bed, I could feel the strong pull of exhaustion. I really hand't slept much since Cally's accident, so when I closed my eyes, it didn't take long before I fell into a deep sleep.
