I'll Follow You Into The Dark

Love of mine, some day you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark

John stood anxiously in the dark room, tapping his foot against the floor to create a steady beat that sort of distracted him from the gravity of the task at hand.

He had been planning this for weeks, months even, and if it fell apart, he wasn't sure what he would do with himself. Beverly was his life after all.

The thought of her made a small smile grace his lips. He imagined her reaction to what he had planned, saw her standing there with her hands over her mouth and her gorgeous violet eyes wide with surprise. He pictured himself picking her up and spinning her slender frame around till they both got dizzy.

No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark

His grip on the sheet of paper he was holding tightened, causing it to crumple slightly. He cursed under his breath and placed it on the chair that stood next to him, smoothing it out to the best of his ability. The edge of the paper cut him, and he brought it to his mouth to ease the sharp sting it brought. He thought of how whenever this happened around Beverly, she'd fuss about it and fawn over him until he managed to convince her that it was no big deal.
"Forever," he said softly, running his hand over the rich velvet covering of a box that also lay on the chair.

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the "No"'s on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

He thought of how she was beauty personified, even after the cancer took her hair and the blush in her cheeks.

You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
It's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms

He remembered how she had completely broken down when they told her it was terminal, not because she was upset about being about to die, but because she didn't want to leave him. He'd comforted her, crooning songs by The Script to her in a hoarse voice and whispering, "Forever" over and over until she fell asleep.

If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the "No"'s on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you
When your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark

He thought of how she'd told him that she'd left everything she owned to him. He gently cracked open the box and tentatively pulled out the object inside.

Then I'll follow you into the dark

There was a loud noise that cut through the air like a whip and caused the pigeons outside the building to fly away in alarm. A single sheet of paper floated to the ground. It read, "Because I promised."

The color of love coated the floor.
