CHAPTER TWELVE

"Kaitlynn that's horrible!" Jackie yelled after steadying her hand on the steering wheel. But Kaitlynn heard the hint of curious excitement in her voice and laughed evilly. She unlocked the iPod and went to "Voice memos" There was one titled "7:23pm" and her finger hovered over the play button. Jackie bit her lip, "Seriously Kaitlynn I can't believe you did that." Kaitlynn was smirking, "Don't you wanna LISTEN?" Jackie hesitated, this was so so bad. But she had to admit it, she wanted to listen rather desperately. "Hey," Kaitlynn eyes were glinting mischievously, "trust me, you need to hear this," she plugged the iPod into the car adaptor, "If they find out, blame it all on me, I'm the horrible, yet persuasive influence." She giggled and pressed play. Jackie gasped as Josh's sexy accent came from the speakers, "I'm sorry!" he was saying, "I cant help it!" Niall's voice sounded tired, "Look mate, you don't go around giving random pretty girls piggyback rides," Jackie could hear his exasperated sigh, "you have a girlfriend." Josh tried to protest but Niall cut him off, "Josh, you can't just shamelessly flirt like that. Think about how Scarlett would feel." There was a low, guttural noise then a crash like something fell over. She heard Niall's surprised "Shit!" then Josh's voice angry, frustrated voice, "I know goddammit! But Niall she's just so fucking beautiful I can't take it." Jackie's eyes widened. She could practically SEE Josh's frustrated expression, his mouth set in a determined little line. Niall tried for lightness, "Well um...you didn't have to kick the damn trash can over...it smells like shit now." Jackie smiled. Josh groaned, "Niall I'm serious, Jackie's the most beautiful girl I've ever seen. And she's so sweet. Oh my god her smile..." he trailed off. Jackie felt a blush climb up her neck. Holy shit. Kaitlynn grabbed one of her hands and squeezed, "I know I know I KNOOOWWW," she breathed. "Josh you don't even really KNOW this girl," it was Niall, "and how many times do I have to tell you, YOU HAVE A GIRLFRIEND NAMED SCARLETT KINGSLY who would...well, BEAT THE LIVING SHIT OUT OF YOU if she found out about this." Josh chuckled a bit, "Yeah, Scar would be pretty pissed..." Scar? She had a nickname? Jackie clenched her teeth. There was a pause. "Niall, you know back when you met Bella?" Josh said quietly. Niall groaned in frustration, "Don't bring my girlfriend into this please." "No no just listen," Josh pleaded, Jackie pictured him running a hand through his hair, "you always said it was like...you just looked at her and you KNEW. You knew she was that girl." Niall mumbled, "Yeah...God did I really sound that cheesy?" He raised his voice, "but wait. You said the same thing about Scarlett when you first met her, you idiot." "No I--" Josh stopped, "it's different..." Jackie gripped the steering wheel. Hard. "You confuse me sometimes," Niall was saying, "If you don't love Scarlett anymore, then you gotta end things." Josh made a frustrated noise, "But I---It's not that easy Niall!" Yes. YES IT FUCKING IS. Niall sighed again, "Josh, I hope you know what you've gotten yourself into...Maybe this weird uh, attraction towards Jackie is just a fling?" Josh was quiet. There was a lot of rustling and she heard the Kaitlynn in the recording whisper, "Oh fuck." Jackie giggled a bit, God Kaitlynn you idiot. "Babe?" a whiny voice cut through the rustling, "You out here?" Scarlett. "Yeah over here." Josh replied wearily. Scarlett's voice was demanding, "Seriously why didn't you call me the WHOLE day til you got to this dinky restaurant?" God she was a handful, "And what's this about Jackie?" So Scarlett DID remember her name. Ugh. There was an awkward silence, then Josh spoke quickly, "uh Niall thinks she's pretty." Niall let out a indignant noise and Scarlett laughed. "Really?" Scarlett was giggling, "She's so...plain." Jackie stiffened. "Bitch," Kaitlynn's voice came at the same time from both the speakers and by Jackie's side. The boys were silent. Scarlett continued, "Haha but I'd be happy to tell Bella that if you like," she was almost in hysterics. Niall was quiet. God, her laugh was--"Jesus her laugh sounds like...a fart," Kaitlynn said aloud. Jackie chuckled, "Mind meld!" their genuine laughs drowned out the annoying giggling. Jackie rolled her neck, WHY was Josh still with this bitch? He had to have some ulterior motive...right? Scarlett was done laughing, "Can we go back inside now? I'm cold," she whined. There was a lot of rustling and whispered swearing from the Kaitlynn in the recording, probably trying to get back before they did. It cut off at Niall's voice angrily muttering, "Screw you." Undoubtedly trying to call his girlfriend before Scarlett did.
