When she had reached her aunt and uncle’s house she tried to make a beeline for her room. Along the way she intercepted by her aunt, who came out of the kitchen. There was no use even trying to get to her room now. Her aunt would just come up later to call her down for dinner.

With a sigh, Alexis followed her aunt back in the kitchen. There, she sat down at the table and tapped her index finger against the wood. The ends of her mouth were turned down in a frown. This entire day had been unexpected. To begin with she never planned on searching for a job; she was reminded to bring over the gray hoodie and then the whole ice cream incident. At least she got a job, for now her aunt and uncle could leave her alone about that. Keeping her eyes glued to one place she did not realize her aunt was talking to her until a wet sponge came flying at her.

Snapping her head up, Alexis growled at her aunt. “What the hell was that for?” Pushing away from the table, she stood up. “I did not do anything to you and you throw a sponge at me?”

“Calm down sweetie, I was just trying to get your attention. You have been staring at the table so hard I thought you were going to burn a hole in it.” A laugh came from Aunt Bea’s mouth, and Alexis frowned even more.

“You could have just told me to stop staring at the table,” retorted Alexis, crossing her arms over her chest.

Shaking her head, Aunt Bea turned her back on Alexis. Starting to put some dishes she took her time explaining how she did try. “You were zoned out, sweetie. I called your name a dozen times, but you were in your own little world. I really did not mean to make you so upset.”

Swallowing, Alexis knew that Aunt Bea was telling the truth. Both her aunt and uncle tried to make her as happy as possible. Having her be in a good mood did not occur often, for as she grew older things changed. There was more responsibility placed on her shoulders, and she could not always handle what they asked of her. Pleasing them was hard, for they expected everything to be perfect.

“I was just going to tell you about the party at the art gallery. It is tomorrow night and we wanted you to come. You can even bring a guest if you like,” continued Aunt Bea. “You don’t have to tell us if there is going to be an extra person, we will just account for them no matter what.”

Then her aunt came over and placed a hand on her shoulder, “We will give you money so you can go shopping for an outfit for the party.” Her aunt leaned down and kissed her on top of her head. Alexis shut her eyes, for she hated anything mushy, like kisses on top of heads. It almost made no sense considering the fact that she had dated before, and her past boyfriend did loads of sweet things that would have been considered mushy.

As her aunt took a step back, Alexis opened her eyes. Now looking at her aunt, she could see an almost sad look on her face. All she was doing was making people mad at her. First it had been Paisley at the coffee shop, Michael was next, and Ashton was after him and now her aunt. How many more people would she hurt today? There were not many more she could think of.

“Right, well I will be there with or without someone by my side.” Giving her aunt a faint smile, she backed up towards the kitchen entrance. “I will go shopping and fine a stunning outfit and make you glad that I went to the party.” Pausing in the doorway, she thought about her new job. Mentioning that might bring her Aunt Bea’s spirits back up.

“I also found a job,” she said quickly. Turning she sprinted up the stairs to her room and locked the door behind her. Panting, she walked over to her bed and curled up in a tiny ball.
