"So... how long do you intend to stay mad at Damon?"
I stopped chewing, staring up at the star filled sky as I set my chinese take out box on the pavement.
"I dunno. I suppose ignoring him for a week is a bit harsh. Even for me."
Hunter watched me as I gazed at my hands, concern in his eyes.
"If you don't mind me asking... why did you freak out when he asked about your scars?" Hunter asked, tilting his head.
I felt angry rush through my veins before I gave a defeated sigh, staring back up at the sky.
"I suppose I have to tell someone eventually. I'm touchy about those scars because... well... they make me hideous. Unlovable. A monster," I whispered, pulling my legs up to my chest, memories ringing in my head.
Hunter watched me in shock, saying nothing as if he knew I wasn't finished.
"I got them a while back, when I was only about 13. It carried on for about two years I think? I can't even remember right. God it felt like forever." I gave a half hearted laugh, trying to mask my fear," I had an ex who was really possessive. He was older than me and afraid that I would lose interest in him when I got older. So he marked me. Took a knife and ran it across my back every day for two years straight until one day he just left. Sometimes he would heat the knife on the stove beforehand to make sure it left an even worse mark. Sometimes he would just take a cigarette, light it and stick it on my back, arms, legs, whatever was closest. And when he was too lazy to fetch a knife or a light a cigarette, he'd just beat me. He came up with a new cruel and unusual punishment every day, and said it was because he loved me."
I stopped, tears blurring my vision.
"Caine, right?" Hunter asked.
"What?"
"Your ex is Caine, right? The one Ryan mentioned at the party," Hunterr said, watching me as I nodded.
We sat in silence, a pregnant silence between us before Hunter broke it.
"You told me your story. Can I tell you one now?" Hunter said, looking up at sky.
"Sure," I wiped my tears away furiously, glad for something to distract me.
"Once upon a time-"
"Wait wait, let me get this straight. I tell you my deepest darkest secret and you tell me a fairytale. What's your name, maple syrup? Cause it should be you sap!" I laughed.
"Man you're mean."
"I'm not mean. You're just a sissy."
I laughed and HUnter rolled his eyes, smiling.
"Let me finish would you! It's actually a decent story!"
"Ok ok."
"Sheesh I don't think I even wanna tell you anymore," Hunter sighed in mock defeat.
"You changed your mind? Does this one work better?" I asked, happily, looking at him with a stupid grin on my lips.
"You make it sound as if I'm stupid," Hunter laughed.
"You, my friend, didn't fall out of the stupid tree. You were dragged through dumb-ass forest."
"Ouch."
"Ouch indeed. Now get on with your stupid story before I kick you out."
Hunter laughed once before smiling at me.
"Once upon a time..."
