Her hand flew through the air, connecting with my cheek before I knew what was happening.
A sharp stinging cause my eyes to widened and I froze.
"You... monster..."
I gasped in surprise as I glanced down at Ryann and what I saw shocked me.
Her eyes which usually shone happiness were filled with tears and anger.
Her lips that were always pulled up in a smirk quivered with a mixture of anger and fear.
And her spirit... her lovely spirit which gave her her sharp attitude and witty comebacks was shattered.
Her heavy breathing and tear filled eyes told me that much.
"Ryann I-"
"Shut up! Shut up shut up shut up! I never want to hear anything from you ever again! You're nothing but a monster!" She screamed, raising her hand again.
"That's a little harsh don't you think?"
Her breath caught in her throat and she glanced up at me with hatred.
"A little harsh...? You want to hear harsh? Fine. Here's something you left out of your little 'fairytale': that boys bother took advantage of a little girl who'd just lost her parents. The brother raped the girl every day, relentlessly. He ignored her cries and pleas, told her she was worthless because she was letting him do that to her even though she begged him not to. And the little boy? He was just as bad, because he knew that his brother was hurting the girl. Or did you conveniently forget that?"
Her hand fell and her breathing grew labored.
"Ryann I can't pretend to know what you went through but you can't blame me."
My words seemed to spark a fresh wave of anger and she glared at me.
"You're right, you can't! Do you have any idea how it feels to look at the only person you love and feel nothing but fear? And then to finally get rid of him, to start a normal life, to finally trust someone other than yourself ...only to have him turn out to be a monsters brother?" Fresh tears fell and she shook; with rage or fear I couldn't tell.
I was speechless, completely taken back by her words.
"You should go."
She broke the silence, her eyes cast down as she clenched her fists.
"Rya-"
"No! Leave! Before I call the cops!" She screamed, pushing me back sharply.
I opened my mouth, looking for something - anything - to calm her down or reassure her.
But for the first time ever, my words failed me and I found myself walking away from Ryann, leaving her alone.
I walked away in such a hurry that I almost didn't notice the guy until I bumped into him.
"Sorry." I muttered.
"Is everything ok? I heard you and some chick arguing. I'm her neighbor." The guy had brown hair and green eyes with a forgettable face.
"Uh yeah. We just had a fight."
"Are you two okay?" He asked, concern in his eyes.
I sighed raking my hand through my hair.
"I don't think so."
Something flickered through his eyes and he nodded, wishing me the best before walking away.
I glanced back at Ryann's house once more, hoping to catch a glimpse of her in the door but she was long gone, nothing left but the Chinese take out boxes.
"Oh god Ryann... what have I done?"
