Nora’s pov
“I can’t believe we are going back to London.” He says, brushing his hand over mine as we both buckle up as the sign above us glows. I couldn’t believe it myself. So much has happened so far, I still can’t wrap my head around Harvey being my uncle (I haven’t told that to Zayn or anyone for that matter). I mean, what more could I want than having Zayn by my side? That thought didn’t bother me. What I’ve felt for him these past few days swims in my body as a guilty pleasure. My fingers tap several times on the arm rest between us, thoughts overwhelming me. “You look really worried.” I turn to face him. His brown eyes look soft like feathers, flakes of gold surrounding his irises. His lower lip is caught up in between his teeth, his stubble tickling my cheek.
“I am fine, I guess.”
“Is it Liam you’re worried of?”
“Eh, him and something else.”
“I won’t tell him anything.” His eyes leave mine and I feel cold, as though I’ve said something wrong. I try to say something, I try to say anything, but the words get stuck in my throat and my hands tremble.
“I am not ashamed of you or anything, Zayn, it’s just that—“
“He’s your boyfriend and I’m his friend, don’t you think that I already know that? When we get back, we pretend nothing happened, we pretend I didn’t even come along.”
“But Zayn—“
“But Zayn what?”
“Nothing.” From there, we exchange a few words during the flight and before I know it, we are out collecting our suitcases and saying our goodbyes. I didn’t want our goodbye to be this bitter, because after all, after all this time, I can admit that I’ve actually fallen in some sort of emotion I am afraid resembles love, but, this is like a road with no ending, we are never going to be together.
He politely asks if I needed a ride back home because his car was parked at the airport, but when I say no, that my parents are going to take me back, he understandingly nods, shoving his hands into his pockets, looking downwards. “So this is a goodbye for now?”
“I guess.” I don’t really know what to expect when I begin to watch him walk away with a suitcase in his hand and a bag over his shoulder. He didn’t even hug me or at least leave a peck on the cheek with something along the lines of hey Nora, I really had fun with you, too bad it ended. With every step he took, I felt a vein in my body dilate with blood and my skin warm up. I try to blink back the tears, but Igive out a quiet sob. When I see my parents approach me, I wipe the tears fr0m my eyes, looking at my father put his arm over my shoulder and lead us out into the car.
“Where’s that boyfriend of yours?” He questions as we stand by the vehicle, waiting for the suitcases to get in.
“He went back home.”
“I really liked him, he is an ambitious lad. Bring him with you the next time you come over.” There wouldn’t be a next time.
