CHAPTER TEN - TRIS

Late Sunday night I stand with Will and Christina, over looking the Chasm. I stare deep into the Chasem wondering if Al was scared when he jumped, or if he was thankful that the life he no longer wanted was coming to an end.

The treacherous waters, blended into the night, creating a sense of home that I have grown to love. Since I found out that my mother was Dauntless I've grown to love this place more and more. I know longer feel as though I have abandoned my mother, but as though I am becoming the person she was.

"Amazing isn't it?" I gawk at the water as Christina hands me a stack of of paper. We got a copy of every single report that Jeanine Matthews has done in the past weeks that I have been here in Dauntless.

"What?" Christina asks me as we sort through the papers one by one, shredding them each into tiny pieces and letting the night carry them away.

"The Chasem." I replied tearing a piece down the middle. She looks at me with an odd look in her eyes, and I just roll mine and smile to myself. Will holds up a piece of paper, showing Jeanine's face.

"I can't believe that Erudite are to stupid too realise what this monster is doing" He spits in disgust, as if someone just shoved a lemon in his mouth. "I can't believe that I actually used to believe her. I honestly did."

I sighed and let the pieces of another report slip though my fingers, "Well, she's not Candor that's for sure." Christina nods in agreement, as she reaches towards the ground where I placed the reports to retrieve another one.

One by one, the reports were shredded into pieces, slipping through our fingers, letting the night air carry them away, and into the chasem. I know that this won't get rid of them permanently, but it made me feel a little bit better.

We stand in silence for several moments, before the question that has been turning over in my mind slips out. "Have you ever met her?" I ask Will as we watch the last article be taken by the darkness.

"Once. Before she was a leader though, she and my older sister Cara were working on a serum together" he says not lifting his eyes from the darkness.

For a few more minutes we stand there in silence not really knowing what to say. Nobody could say anything to make us feel better, the damage was done. Jeanine finally got the reaction she wanted, she caused pain upon me and my family and all of those around us.

The silence was broken by Christina. "Bedtime kiddies!" She said, clapping her hands together and tugging on mine and Wills arm. Up ahead I see Four walking with a small black box held in his hand.

A sudden urge over took my body, causing things I didn't even mean to say slip out of my mouth, "Hey, I'm gonna go talk to Four. I'll be back later" I say pulling my arm free.

"Are you sure you want to be alone at this time of night?" She asks while biting the inside of her cheek. The last time that I was alone at this time of night, I almost died. But Four saved me.

"I won't be alone, I'll be with Four." I replied. She nods in return and pulls will along behind her. I watch them for a few more moments before going after Four.

I quietly run along the path to the side of the Chasem, cautiously creeping up the stairs. I watch Fours figure disappear into the fear landscape room. "What is he doing?" I mumble to myself, as I followed the path.

I slowly jog, breathlessly towards Four, I have no idea what I'm going to say to him, not until I find out what it is that he is doing up here at this time of night. I push the door open, causing a creek to file in before me.
