For Halloween, we went to the dance they were having at school. What better than being around sweaty teens in costumes to spend Halloween?

We had to coax Larkin to go. That was after she made up with our sisters. Yeah, my sisters can hold grudges like no other. Ma said they get that from Dad.

Larkin was a hard-ass about it, and Lakin had Mia call Maverick. If it's one thing we learned about Maverick, he could get Larkin to do something; we couldn't. He had a certain way with her.

He showed up and talked to her.

"Maverick, I don't want to go," she huffed.

"That's fine, but it will be able boring going and you not being there," he shrugged.

"Wait. Why are you going to?" Larkin asked him.

"Well, I like dances and dressing up. There's dancing, punch, snacks, and girls," he said casually.

"Wait, a minute, what girls?" She looked at him.

"Girls," he shrugged, "all types, all kinds of girls. You know of the female persuasion," he said.

She looked at him.

"What about me?" Larkin asked.

"What about you?" Maverick asked.

"But, but, but," Larkin stammered.

"Well, if you don't want to go to the dance, obviously I will not dance with Major. That would be too weird. So, I would need to dance with a girl. Now if you do go, then I don't have to worry about dancing with anyone but you. It's simple," he said, not flinching.

She looked at him, "Fine, but only because I don't want you dancing with any other girls."

"Okay," he smiled. "I'll wait for you downstairs." He turned and walked away as she got ready.

I saw him in the hallway. "Why not be straight with Lark? Just say you want her to go."

"Because I learned something about your sister, she's not the type to do things the easy way, and she's not the type to admit her feelings. Lex, sometimes being direct with someone doesn't work," he explained to me.

"I hate games," I huffed.

"It's not a game. A game is trying to make someone jealous. I'm not trying to make Larkin jealous, but I know she needs a reason. So I gave her one. There's the difference," he said to me.

"I just feel like if I don't tell Piper upfront, then I will have to deal with the outcome," I said to him.

"Let me ask you this. Has Piper given you any reason not to trust her?" Maverick asked me.

"Well, I saw her talking to some guy," I mentioned.

"When?" Maverick asked.

"At school, it was before we kissed," I explained.

"Were you together?" He asked me.

"No," I answered.

"But you got jealous because she was talking to someone that wasn't you, but you still got jealous? Interesting," Maverick commented. He tapped his lips with his finger.

"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked him.

"That means it took someone indirectly to make you see what you wanted. Piper didn't set out to make you jealous. You both weren't together, which meant you could talk to whoever you wanted. You got jealous all on your own. See my point?" Maverick asked me.
