Luna had to stay in the hospital last night for observation. Uncle Nolan and Aunt Brook, along with Major, stayed with her all night. Dad and Ma worried but didn't want to leave us alone. I didn't know why.
The next day she woke up and cringed because of her ribs and nose. Uncle Nolan got up and checked on her. "Hey Lu, how are you feeling?"
"As I got hit by a truck," she winced.
"Well, take it easy. I'll get the doctor to check on you," he said as he left the room. Aunt Brook looked at her. "Oh, honey, we were so worried about you."
"I know. I'm so sorry, Aunt Brook," she whispered.
"Hun, you have nothing to be sorry about this. Someone did this to you," she explained.
"But why? I mean, all I remember was going to the bathroom, and the next thing I know, someone hit me in the face and then kicked me. They said it was a warning to Ma and Dad. What did they mean it was a warning?" She looked, Aunt Brook.
"I don't know," she said with worry.
Uncle Nolan popped his head into the room. "I will call Nash and Maggie. Want to come with me?" He asked Aunt Brook.
"Yeah," she said as she leaned over and kissed Luna on the top of her head. "We'll be right back."
She walked out of the room, and Major got up and walked over to her. She looked at him, "Did you stay all night?"
"Yep," Major answered.
"Why?" Luna asked him.
"Why not?" He shrugged.
"Because I look hideous," she sighed.
"Luna, there's more to life than how someone looks," Major reasoned.
"Look at me. I look like a monster," Luna grumbled.
He leaned down and looked into her steel-grey eyes with his blue ones. "I am."
She looked at him.
"Luna, I don't care what you look like on the outside. You could wear a burlap sack for all I care, and I would still like you," he told her.
"Why?" Luna asked.
"Why not? To me, there's more to a person than how they look. I like to go deeper. I want to see what makes Luna tick," he said as he took a seat on the hospital bed.
She looked at him as he continued. "Luna, there's more to life than looks. Trust me; I see how the boys look at you, but they only see the outside package."
"Yeah, most didn't care about anything besides what I looked like in appearance. Then, every time I turned around, I got blamed when some guy tried to get with me. Then rumors flew around about me. I didn't even have my first kiss until you," she said, looking down, playing with the blanket.
"Wait. Are you telling me in the car before homecoming was the first time you had kissed anyone?" Major asked her.
"Yes," she whispered.
Major said nothing but rubbed his chin. That was not how he planned things. Major liked Luna but didn't want her first kiss to be random. He knew he had to handle this delicately.
"Luna, look at me," he said to her. She lifted her head until their eyes met. He reached over, and he took her hand, "I made a promise to your dad that I wouldn't do anything until your eighteenth birthday, and I plan on keeping that promise. But maybe it's time we taught you some self-respect for yourself."
