Uncle Nixon dragged Dad along with Kaiden and Kain off to California. It seems he had some wedding to perform. That didn't sit well with Ma, not with everything going on. To ease her mind, we stayed with my grandparents. Plus, Dad felt better to have us with family than alone in the house. With Nana and Grampa having enough room, we could have our bedrooms.
I was downstairs helping nana when she had me get Ma. I walked upstairs to her room. I heard sniffing and saw her sitting on the edge of the bed. I walked in, "Ma?"
She turned to me and wiped her face. "You okay?"
"Ah yeah, I'm just missing your dad a bit," she whispered.
"He's coming home in a few days," I reassured her. She nodded. I walked over and took a seat next to her and wrapped my arms around her. She immediately hugged me back. The thing about my parents when they are apart, they missed each other terribly. I hope to have the love they have for each other one day. I had a feeling I would, and it would be with Piper.
We sat there as she held onto me. While we were sitting in Dad's old room, we didn't know there was something to go on downstairs.
The front door opened, and before anyone said anything, they put their finger to their lips, quieting everyone. They set their bag down and walked upstairs as the other's followed. They walked down the hallway, and until they came to the bedroom, we were upstairs. I glanced up, and they motioned to me. I nodded as I looked at Ma. "I think Grammy needs my help." She nodded as she let me go, and I got up, walking to the door.
They walked over as she started to cry and climbed onto the bed. Leaning into her ear from behind, they whispered, "Baby girl is there a reason you're crying?"
She turned to come face to face with Dad. We stood at the doorway and watched them. He smiled, and she tackled him, causing them both to fall off of the bed, landing onto the floor. Dad let out a chuckle. "Miss me?"
"More than you know," she smiled as he pulled her lips to his. Then they started to make out. Yeah, no, no kid wants to watch their parents make out. It was pretty gross.
We stayed for dinner, but afterward, we went home. Dad wanted to sleep in his bed, and so did the rest of us.
"How was the wedding?" Ma asked him.
"Interesting, Nix knows how to put his spin on things," he said as she giggled. "How's the party planning coming?"
"Good, Kat could get everything done with them all out of the house. The girls and I helped her, so everything is all set for their party," she told him.
"Good, because now I get to spend some alone time with my wife," he said, pulling her to him as he rolled her onto her back on the bed. As they started to kiss and get into it, they heard yelling coming from our rooms. They stopped, and Dad looked at Ma.
"Welcome home," she grinned. Dad dropped his head and sighed.
"Yep," Dad said.
Things were finally getting back to normal for all of us, including the bickering and dad having to separate us. Good times, I tell you.
The day of Kaiden's and Kain's birthday arrived, and everyone came to celebrate. They had finally turned eighteen, and I think Uncle Nixon was happy because not only are they adults now, but soon they would be off to college. I know he was ecstatic about it.
But in all seriousness, even if Uncle Nix griped about the twins, I know to him, they were everything next to Aunt Kat. He just showed it differently.
We all hung out when they strolled over to us. "Looks like we finally joined the ranks of the adult world," Kain smirked.
"That's if you acted like adults instead of a putz," Marshall snickered.
They gave him a look and rolled their eyes.
"So, Larkin, when are you going to give that poor schmuck a chance?" Kain asked her.
"Who?" Larkin asked.
"That yutz that drools over you. Merrill, Merrick, whatever the frick his name is," Kaiden said.
"You mean, Maverick?" She asked with a look.
"Yeah, that cheese head," Kaiden replied.
She looked at them.
"Look, we know you have some weird trust issue, but seriously, that dude is like, totally in love with you," Kaiden said in a mocking girly voice.
"Like totally," Kain mocked.
"Maverick is my counselor, nothing more. So drop it," she huffed.
They shrugged and looked at Luna. "What about you?"
"What about me?" Luna asked.
"Are you going to give that doof a chance?" Kain asked her.
"First, my private life is none of your business. Second, I need not answer that," she huffed.
They walked around to her back and leaned in.
"Oh, I think you do," Kain said.
"We know you do," Kaiden added.
"You don't know squat," she spat.
They looked at each other. "Oh look, poor Luna is feeling sorry for herself because a hot guy likes her, boo hoo," Kain teased.
"Kain!" Luna yelled.
He stepped away from her as she balled her fist.
"Hit a nerve, did I? Newsflash sweetheart, life isn't all hearts and flowers. People will not cater to you, twenty-four-seven because its life and life sucks. So, either both you suck it up and deal with it or don't, but for God's sake, give these poor schmucks a chance," Kain told them.
That was the thing with Kain; he told it like it was. He didn't care if he hurt your feelings. He wasn't the guy that babied anyone, and we all knew it. Whereas Kaiden, like to flirt and had no filter, Kain knew what he would say. I understood it more than anyone. That's why we were close.
Larkin and Luna walked away.
"Nice going, Kain," Lakin said with a look.
"Eh, someone had to tell them. All this babying is crap. It serves no purpose except for people to think the world owes them something. The truth is the world owes us nothing."
As we talked, Dad looked at Uncle Nixon, who wiped a tear away.
"You crying?" Dad asked with a look.
"I'm having a moment. You know Frack being real and all with people," Nixon sniffled.
"Why?" Dad asked.
Nixon looked at him, "Why not?"
Dad gave him a look. "Because it makes you look like a tool."
Nixon gave him a look. "Coming from king tool, himself. Thanks."
"No problem," he said, rolling his eyes.
That was the thing about Dad and his brothers, with ideas, they weren't precisely the mushy type. It's not that they felt you were weak. It was the opposite. They thought it was ammunition, and boy did they use it. So we tried not to show weakness because they go in for the kill.
The weirdest part was, whatever Kain had said, lit a fire under my sister's asses regarding Maverick and Major. Maybe they just needed that little push. I'm not saying that they would jump into their arms soon, but at least they will take baby steps with them. At least, that was a plus.
The birthday party went fine, and everyone had a good time. The only problem was, even though we were enjoying ourselves, it would be short-lived, especially with trouble right around the corner.
