After aimlessly wondering the halls for ten minutes, I arrived at the living room, the large sofas and beautiful scenery making it an ideal place for me to think. The sun was hitting the buildings in a way that fractured each ray into smaller reflections. The whole city was so different from my little village in England, the large buildings towering over any small house or bungalow back home. To think about it, about a week ago I hadn't ever travelled out of the country, and here I was, admiring the New York skyline.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?" Came a soft voice from behind me. I quickly whipped my head around to see a beautiful woman with blonde hair. She didn't look at me though, instead she kept her gaze out the window. I turned back round and looked with her.
"It is." I agreed, letting out a small sign of contempt.
"I'm Virginia, but you can call me Pepper." She walked her way around the sofas and sat down next to me. She held her hand towards me and smiled. Gently, I took her hand and shook.
"Maddy."
"You never get used to it." She let go of my hand and nodded towards the window. I laughed before looking down to my chipped black nails.
"It's just very different." I added. This time she laughed and took my hand.
"You may not get used to the view, but you'll get used to them, the environment, the lifestyle." She said nodding the other way, in the direction of the rooms. Her words brought me comfort knowing the hopefully this whole thing will get easier.
"What if they don't like me? What if I'm not what they want?" I asked hesitantly.
"Trust me, you don't need to worry about that." She smiled again. It was nice that I had a sort of friend here. Not someone I worked with, but someone who could know me away from the powers. Just as I opened my mouth to speak, my phone started to buzz in my back pocket. She looked down and smiled again before standing up and exiting the room. I took the phone out of my pocket and answered the call swiftly.
"Hello?"
"Maddy, its Fury" Said a deep voice through the phone, his voice still as intimidated as always.
"Oh, hey, Mr... Director, sir." I stumbled over my words.
"I spoke with your auntie. She wants to see you. Officially she is your legal guardian for another week, so you'll have to go. She lives in New York and has agreed to meet with you tomorrow. From tomorrow you will live with Jane until you turn 18 then you will come back to the agency and can officially become an agent with S.H.I.E.L.D." He overflowed with information that I struggled to keep up. Did I not get any say in the matter? If I wanted to go, or if I wanted to stay? Also, what if I didn't want to come back to S.H.I.E.L.D?
"What if I don't want to come back to the agency?" I asked curiously.
"We can't order you to come back, but you will. There are still so many questions you need answered... we can do that here." He replied, his argument convincing.
"Okay. What time is it tomorrow?" I asked as I stood up and started to walk towards the window, the view becoming more detailed with each step.
"I'll send a message with the details for tomorrow." I nodded, but realising he couldn't see me, replied with a short 'okay'. "Till next week Maddy. Stay safe, and if you need us... we're always here." I smiled sombrely before putting down the phone. I placed the phone back in my pocket just as the rest of the Avengers gathered into the room. Banner walked over to me and upon seeing my grey face placed a hand on my shoulder. I smiled up at him and nodded back. A silent 'thank you'.
"So, your probably all wondering why we are gathered here today, and no it's not to celebrate Romanoff's and Banner's relationship, nor is it a recovery sleepover to bring us closer as a group – as much as I keep asking they're not budging. But we are here to discuss our next mission. You all have pamphlets in front of you describing the case. You will need to read up on this file, everyone has their own part to play so be prepared when we need you. Oh, and I printed this out myself so take care of them!" Stark explained to everyone like we were children. I looked up to Steve, his eyes were already on me but quickly moved away when he noticed me looking. Why was he looking at me? Thor raised his hand from one of the sofas furthest away. Stark rolled his eyes before pointing to him.
"Lightning lord what do you want?"
"God, I'm a god! And I just wanted to congratulate Natasha and Bruce on their engagement." To this Natasha started to choke on her water, just as little droplets started to form on Bruce's head, both as embarrassed as each other. Everyone went silent before in synchrony, bursting out laughing, staring at a shocked Thor and an uncomfortable couple.
