I just realized that I had no way to get home, but I was not going to ask for the keys. Fuck that. I decided to just walk. I walked down the street and turned a corner until I found the town square. That took about an hour considering I was walking a good 10 miles. I finally found the town square and began to search for the donut shop. My heels were burning from walking on the asphalt. I couldn't put my shoes on or my ankles would snap. I felt utterly scared and lost. What if I get kidnapped again? What if I can find my way home? What if Shawn tries to come home? What am I supposed to say to him? I kept asking myself all these questions, and knew they were all pointless. I felt hot tears stream out of my eyes once again. I wiped the blackness of my mascara and eyeliner out from under my eyes. I sniffed a couple of times before I found a McDonalds. I walked through the side door and ran into the bathroom. From the amount of alcohol I had ingested along with the crying, I knew puking would come sooner or later. I busted through an empty bathroom stall and tried to tie my hair back before it all came out. I got it into a horrible bun before vomit spewed out of my mouth. When I was finished, I stumbled over to the sink on sore feet, rinsed out my mouth, then washed my hands and face. After I was somewhat presentable, I pulled my dress down a little, picked up my heels, fixed my hair into a nice ponytail, then I walked out of the restroom. I tried to not limp as I walked to the front counter.
"Hello, ma'am. Is this for here or to go?" a cute cashier asked me.
"Here. I'll need a minute to decide what I want." I told him. I looked behind me to make sure no one was waiting, then I studied the menu. "I want a black coffee with-" I was cut off by a hand on my shoulder.
"Katie?" Hayes asked me as he studied my outfit. "What are you wearing? Did you just come from a club?" he asked as his eyes grew wide. I shrugged his hand off of my shoulder and turned my attention back to the cashier.
"And I want a large fry." I said, ignoring Hayes' eyes as the searched my body.
"That'll be $7.29." he said as I pulled a $10 out of my bra.
"Sorry, no pockets." I told him, handing the money to him over the counter. He smiled at me and put It in the cash register. I took my change and walked over to the side to wait for my order. Hayes followed.
"I'm not judging, you just don't usually wear stuff like this." Hayes told me. I shrugged and took my tray, walked over to a table, and plopped into the chair. I sipped the bitter coffee and sighed as it filled my empty stomach. I took a good amount of French fries and shoved them into my mouth, eating like a bear. Hayes stared at me with a shocked expression on his face.
"What are we, Katie?" he asked. I looked up at him and pinched my eyebrows together in confusion.
"What?" I asked.
"What are we? Are we a couple, are you and Shawn together?" Hayes asked. I dropped my French fries.
"Why would we be a couple?" I asked.
"That kiss, in the house. Didn't it mean anything to you?" Hayes asked me. Hard realization smacked me straight in the face.
"No. It didn't." I said plainly, picking up my tray and coffee. I kept my fries and hot drink but put the tray back. I guess my heels had to stay on. I sighed, walked back to the table, strapped on my heels, picked up my food, then proceeded to ignore the very stricken looking Hayes. Walking out of the door I came in through, I studied the dark streets. I found a familiar building and walked over to it. As I peered down the street, I saw the Donut Palace sign glow into the night. Sighing, I ran for it. I quickly made my way into the parking lot and sat on the curb for a rest. After I had my breath caught, I stood up and walked as fast as I could across the desolate street and across the sidewalk. I walked for 5 minutes before I stood in front of the beach house driveway. I sighed in relief and ran down it, threw my coffee and empty French frie container into the garbage cans, and searched for the extra key underneath the doormat. I found It, unlocked the door, closed it behind me, locked it again, then plopped right onto the couch. I took off my heels and threw them over to the door. Pulling my phone out of my bra, I unlocked the screen and found out that I had 152 missed calls from Shawn, 58 texts, and 2 voicemails. Also Brittany had left 7 missed calls and 12 text messages asking where I was at. I dialed her number in and pressed call.
"Hey! I'm so sorry for leaving you. Just get Shawn to take you home." I said frantically into the phone.
"Nah, It's cool. I just wanted to make sure you were okay." Brittany told me with a slight slur to her words.
"I'm fine. I'll fill you in tomorrow. I'm going to sleep. Goodnight and try not to stay out too late! It's already... 4 in the morning." I hung up immediately and walked really slowly up the stairs. Shower... drink... sleep... I thought groggily. I stripped out of my night apparel and grunted as my hands touched the rough fabric. As I looked down at my knuckles, I noticed crusted blood for the first time.
"What the fuck?" I whispered. Just then, I remembered the fight, and also the cause of It. I shook my head to clear away the negative thoughts. Not tonight, Katie. Stepping into the hot shower, I smiled to myself as I washed away all of the dirt, sweat, and blood. After the slow, groggy process was completed, I shut off the water and stepped into the steamy exterior. I towel dried my hair and body, the brushed through the tangled mess. Damn, I forgot to condition it. I'm screwed. I thought regrettably as I yanked the comb through the knotted bundle of hair. After I could roughly run my fingers through it, I decided that was enough and layed in the bed without pajamas, then fell asleep instantly.
