After I had returned home and eaten my donuts with Shawn, I grabbed my guitar and headed into the living room with Shawn right behind me. He also had his acoustic guitar with him. I sat on the couch and he sat right next to me. Aaron and Miranda sat on the couch in front of us working the camera.
"Okay, the first round is a practice one. Do not record it." Shawn said as he tuned his guitar. I finished tuning mine before him, so I went into the kitchen to grab two water bottles. I chugged mine then recycled the plastic remains. I tossed Shawn his and he finished his quickly too. I strapped my guitar and put it over my shoulder. Shawn did the same and I found the notes to the song on my phone. I quickly jotted the ones I didn't know down, then I practiced them a couple of times, quickly getting a hang of them and rec strummed ognized them after a while. Shawn knew the song notes by heart and only needed to freshen them up a little.
"You play the guitar on your solo parts, then on the duet parts we play them together." Shawn informed me. I nodded and took my hands off of the guitar strings. I counted to 3 with my fingers, signaling a starting point for the song. Shawn the notes effortlessly. I watched him sing the first verse in awe.
" What day is it? And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time." I knew now that when we sang the song not as a practice round, that it would have more emotion.
"'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." Our guitars mixed together at first, but soon got synchronized after a while. Shawn abruptly stopped playing his guitar.
"Let's retry the chorus again." he proposed. I nodded and recalled the notes mentally. Shawn fingered the numbers 1, 2, and 3. We started strumming at the exact same time, not losing the rhythm once. I smiled at the end of the chorus.
"I think we're ready to record." I said. Practice rounds don't require singing the entire song anyways.
"I agree," Shawn kissed my cheek and I smiled foolishly. "Okay! Record starting... now!" Shawn said enthusiastically. When Aaron showed us a thumbs-up, we both smiled at the camera.
"Hi, I'm Shawn Mendes," he began the introduction, but stopped so I could introduce myself.
"And I'm Katie Skylar," I added in quickly.
"We will be doing a cover of You and Me by Lifehouse." he told the camera with a huge smile. He kissed my cheek then fingered the numbers again. He played the beginning notes, then sang the first verse with 10x more emotion in it than the practice round.
" What day is it? And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive
I can't keep up and I can't back down
I've been losing so much time." he looked at me and we sang together, our guitars falling together easily.
"'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." I looked up to see Miranda smiling brightly at us. I smiled wider than I already was.
"All of the things that I want to say just aren't coming out right
I'm tripping on words
You got my head spinning
I don't know where to go from here." Shawn's amazing raspiness started to kick in around here. I felt myself ooze inside.
"'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." My higher notes sounded beautiful as they harmonized with Shawn's lower notes.
"Something about you now
I can't quite figure out
Everything she does is beautiful
Everything she does is right." The emotion we poured into the bridge was out of control. I don't remember when I started to cry. As we sang, we stared in each other's eyes.
"'Cause it's you and me and all of the people with nothing to do, nothing to lose
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." His guitar stopped strumming during the chorus.
"And me and all of the people with nothing to do and nothing to prove
And it's you and me and all of the people
And I don't know why I can't keep my eyes off of you." During the second part of the chorus, Shawn's guitar joined mine again.
"What day is it
And in what month?
This clock never seemed so alive." I stummed once more, then smiled at the camera with tears in my eyes.
