The boat ride to Browntown usually seemed to take forever but today it seemed to be going by fast. As you sat on the skiff next to your boyfriend Matt you couldn’t help but feel anxious. This wasn’t just any ordinary trip to his families island. The last time you were there his mom had overhead Matt talking about your birthday. It was then that she and his two sisters had insisted that you come back on your birthday to celebrate. You had tried your hardest to talk your way out of it. Birthdays just weren’t your thing. You preferred to spend them alone and had never been one to have all the attention on yourself. Not to mention being another year older in your mind was hardly anything to celebrate. But after all the begging and fake sad faces from everyone you had reluctantly said yes. When Matt had picked you up that morning you couldn’t help but smile as you were greeted with flowers, kisses, and his own version of Happy Birthday. Don’t ask.
Now here you sat watching the waves go by getting more nervous by the minute. You were hoping that they didn’t have anything to extravagant planned out. You didn’t think anyone needed to go out of their way for you. All too soon you saw the smoke from the families home and you could feel yourself get more tense. When you were close enough to the beach Matt turned the engine off and gave you a quick kiss before jumping off to pull the skiff in. You took a deep breath and put on the best happy face you could.
You held Matt’s hand as you walked up the trail to the cabin and all along the way you could see someone had placed beautiful fresh flowers. As you come around the final curve the whole family comes into sight and they immediately shout happy birthday and begin singing. You of course blush and burry your face in Matt’s shoulder hoping anything would happen to take the attention off of you. But it didn’t so you put on a big smile and say thank you to everyone. The last thing you wanted was to seem ungrateful.
As you look around you can see they all went out of their way to make Browntown special for you that day. There were homemade decorations hanging all around and they had even managed to find a few balloons and hung them from a tree. After a few minutes of talking and a few bad old lady jokes from his brothers Ami brought out the cake she had made for you. You made a wish, blew out the candles, and ate what you swear was the best cake you’ve ever had.
Next came the presents. You really couldn’t believe they had went out of their way to do all this for you. The girls had made cute bracelets for you and a sweet homemade card. Ami gave you a beautiful pair of earrings that she explained to you she had bought on the first day they had arrived in Alaska. Next you opened your gift from Bam. It was a picture of you and Matt he had taken a few weeks earlier placed inside a beautiful wooden picture frame Noah had made. You were so touched by all the thoughtful gifts you couldn’t help the tears that came. That was when Ami had suggested you and Matt take a walk and have some alone time.
You held Matt’s hand tight as you walked to your spot in the woods. You loved it there and were pretty sure it was your favorite place in the world. You sat next to him under the shade of the giant tree and rested your head on his shoulder. He told you to close your eyes and you felt him place a box in your hand. You sat up and began to open it and inside was a beautiful necklace. You held it up and examined the pendant hanging from it. Matt explained to you it was the symbol for infinity and that he had made it himself because that’s how much he loved you and how long he wanted to be with you. As you started to cry for the second time that day you decided you never wanted to spend your birthday alone again.
