Danial’s POV
Without looking back, I drove on leaving her standing by the shop. But I would be lying if I said that I didn’t want to turn around and apologize for my behavior because I knew, it wasn’t her fault. I knew that John was being extra friendly with her and not vice-versa.
Then why did you react like that? The voice in my head scolded. The entire ride back home was painful for me, but Mariam was oblivious to it. She kept going on about buying some Versace dress, whatever it was. I couldn’t care less. I was worried about Sara and I was planning on going back to pick her up, after dropping Mariam of course.
“Danial, are you even listening to what I am saying?”, Mariam asked in a high pitched voice.
“What?”, I asked irritated with her constant pestering.
“Forget it”, she said angrily.
Aren’t life partners supposed to be concerned about you? Aren’t they supposed to pick up on your moods? Honestly, I felt Sara understood me more than Mariam does, though she did not react the way I wanted her to but at least she tried. As for Mariam, I don’t think she was anywhere near Sara.
I picked up the speed to reach home as soon as possible. But Mariam had to throw a tantrum, because she was afraid of speed. We reached later than I intended, but as soon as I pulled in front of the front door, I saw grandpa waiting, impatiently for me. My mind instantly reminded me of my own stupidity and I silently prayed for Sara’s safety and well-being.
“Get out, you ungrateful sick piece of crap, get out”, grandpa bellowed at Mariam.
“Oh, so your favorite little kid complaint to you about me, did she now?” Mariam retorted.
“Mariam”, I yelled at her for being so disrespectful.
“What! Didn’t you just see what he said to me, how he was talking to me?”, she complained to me.
“Grandpa what happened?”, I enquired.
“She transferred about seventy thousand pounds into somebody’s account, yesterday afternoon from your joint account”, he informed me.
My head whipped towards her so fast that I heard a crack sound.
“What?” I asked in disbelief.
“Yeah. So what? It’s your money and I needed it. Besides what’s yours is mine, isn’t it?” she had the nerve to say.
“Mariam it’s…” but before I could finish my sentence Marie spoke up.
“Where’s Sara? I didn’t see her go inside”, Marie said while coming outside.
“She actually she, uh…” I stammered trying to think of an excuse.
“Danial, where is Sara?” grandpa asked forgetting all about Mariam.
“She… she…”, thankfully grandpa’s cell phone went off at that moment, but his expressions became even worse, if that was even possible. He got off the phone, and then gave me an angry glare.
“GO.PICK.HER.UP.NOW”, he texted me the place that Sara told him to pick her up from and then motioned for me to leave. Without wasting another second, I got in my car and drove off. I didn’t even know whether I should be worrying about Sara or about what Mariam had done.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I forgot the way I was supposed to go. I took a wrong turn and didn’t realize it until half-an hour of futile search and only when grandpa called me to tell me that Sara was in a nearby hospital did I realize it. I didn’t even ask him if she was okay or not, and without wasting another second I took a left turn and started towards the small hospital. A thousand different possibilities went through my mind. I tried tuning them out but failed miserably. In my hurry I almost ran a person over, missed hitting a tree by inches and avoided crashing with another car by a centimeter.
