"Hey, you're going to have a great day," although I appreciated the effort I highly doubted that today was going to be anything but terrible, but I didn't want to take away my mom's hope for a new start so soon.
So I managed to throw an artificial smile on my face and responded with a little,"Sure." I stared into my bowl of corn flakes and slowly stirred my spoon around, thinking about what was to come of today. I was starting at a new school today, In a new town, with new people. What made It worse was the fact that It was the middle of the school year.
My train of thought was cut off when I heard my mom say, "Okay, I have to leave now, I love you, I'll see you tonight." I gave a half-hearted wave to her as she quickly grabbed her purse and headed out the door.
I put my bowl in the sink and let the remaining cereal wash down the drain. I checked my phone and saw a text from Jared. Be outside In 3 mins. Jared was, to put it simply a family friend. My mom had talked to his mom about him giving me rides to school since she worked. I sent him a quick reply as I put on my shoes. Ok. I grabbed my backpack, double checked everything was In there and shuffled my way out the door. I awkwardly fiddled with my thumbs as I waited outside, the air cold on my breath.
I looked up as I heard an old engine crawl down the street. Followed by it was an old red truck and behind the driver's wheel was Jared himself. The tires screeched as he pulled over to a stop right in front of me. I quickly scrambled into the passenger seat of the car not wanting to make Jared wait for me.
I leaned my head against the window as he pulled off watching all the houses go by the radio a quiet dull In the background. A quiet hum of the car could be heard as It warmed up from being used so early in the morning. It was almost peaceful, until Jared opened his mouth and asked, "You meet your soulmate yet?".
At the mention of my soulmate I self consciously rubbed my thumb over the name on my wrist, Connor Murphy. Soulmates weren't exactly a good topic for me considering mine was one of the reasons I got bullied. It wasn't because of the person himself It was their gender that was the issue. I was completely fine with my soulmate being a boy, It didn't phase me, but I couldn't say the same thing about other people. I realized I had gotten lost In my thought's again so I swiftly shook my head and stated, "No."
Thankfully Jared seemed to get I didn't want to talk about that and said, "I haven't either". We didn't talk for the rest of the car ride to the school.
We arrived at the school and Jared pulled into a parking spot that had paint on It that read, 'THE INSANELY COOL JARED KLEINMAN'S PARKING SPOT'. Jared parked the car and we both jumped out and headed to the school's entrance. When we got there Jared turned around and proclaimed, "Welcome to hell, try not to die."
I didn't know whether that was good or bad so I gave him a quiet, "Th-th-thank you?"
He didn't seemed bothered by my response as he continued to talk, "Meet me here after school, don't be late". He twirled around and started to head into the school until I remembered I had no idea where I was going.
I rushed up to him and softly grabbed his sleeve and muttered a quiet, "Wait,"
He turned back around to look at me an eyebrow raised expectantly, "Could y-you um, show me w-where the office is?"
I let go of his sleeve as he gave me an exasperated sigh, "Follow me". I followed behind him as he started walking In what I could only assume to be the direction of the office, "You're lucky we got here early," he looked over his shoulder at me but turned back around when I didn't answer him. After walking down a few more hallways he finally announced, "Here It Is". With that he turned on his heels and left me standing outside the double doors.
