It was Saturday evening and here I was standing outside a starbucks. I walked into the building, holding the door open as I went. The smell of fresh brewed coffee enveloped the room. I made my way over to the line rehearsing my order in my head, even though I ordered the same thing every time. The person In front of me had finished ordering and sat down In a chair waiting for their drink to be made. I walked in front of the cash register my eyes glued to the floor.
I was about to order my drink when I heard, "Iced coffee with milk, that'll be $2.95"
I lifted my eyes from off the ground and they landed on the barista behind the counter. A lanky teen stood there in his green apron looking like he would rather be anywhere else. He looked as if he would work at hot topic rather than a starbucks. His name tag read 'Connor'
He looked like he was waiting for a response, and I then realised I had just been staring at him, "U-uh w-what".
He stared at me blankly and slowly repeated, "Iced coffee with milk, that'll be $2.95".
"I ha-haven't even or-ordered yet" I stammered out.
He appeared annoyed at having to explain himself if the sigh he released said anything, "You come in here every week and order the same thing, so unless you plan on changing it today that's going to be $2.95" I opened and closed my mouth like a fish sucking in oxygen trying to figure out what to say.
I didn't think I came here enough for someone to have memorized my order but here was this barista standing in front of me. I pulled out my wallet and and pulled out a couple ones congratulating myself for not dropping them considering how badly my hands were shaking.
"H-here, keep the t-the change", I handed the cash over to him jolting a bit when his hand brushed across mine for a brief second.
I swear I saw a ghost of a smile appear on his face, "Thank you, your drink will be ready soon". I took my receipt from him and nodded moving over to sit on one of the stools the corner of the room.
Another Saturday came and I found myself standing outside the same starbucks, as always. I walked inside feeling my heart flutter a bit while I walked over to the counter not knowing why I felt this way all of a sudden. I almost immediately spotted the boy behind the counter and I felt my breath catch in my throat at the sight. He had his hair put up high in a bun and once again he wore that green apron.
I walked straight over to the counter seeing as there was no line today, "Hello, h-how are y-you t-today" I managed to stumble out.
"Well my day just got better" He winked at me, winked! I had to physically restrain myself from hiding behind my hands so he couldn't the blush that was sure to be on my face. He acted like he never said anything and continued, "The usual?" I somehow managed to nod my head to answer his question.
While he was typing up my order I couldn't help but ask, "S-so wh-what time d-do y-you g-g-go on break?" He looked generally surprised by my question, and it was nice seeing a new facial expression on his face.
He glanced at the clock on the wall and looked back at me and answered, "I've got another 20 minutes before I go on break".
I was going to ask him out, I was but my brain seemed to shut off as I responded with, "T-thats n-ni-nice". I would pay the ground to swallow me whole at that moment. The look on his face made me want to look myself and never go outside ever again. He probably hates me now, why couldn't I just talk to him like a normal person. I practically threw the respected amount of money at him and blasted over to a table in the corner farthest away from him.
I refused to look at him because I was sure he was looking at me weird and he probably never wanted me to come back again and I had ruined all my chances and, "Iced Coffee for Even", I grabbed my drink and rushed out of the starbucks. It wasn't until I got in my car and calmed down that I noticed the number written on my cup.
The next Saturday came and here I was, sitting in my car outside the starbucks to scared to go in. I had texted Connor a couple times throughout the week. I had apologized for being so awkward last Saturday, while he said it was cute. I took a deep breath and left my car entering the Starbucks I was so accustomed to.
Connor saw me enter and sent me a smile that could have killed me it was so precious. There was a bit of people in line today so I walked over to end of it sensing Connors eyes on me even though he was talking to a customer. Unlike last time I was here instead of rehearsing my order I was trying to think of what to say to him.
Slowly the line edged forward until finally I was standing in front of Connor, "H-hi C-co-connor".
"Hello Evan, the usual?", he still had that stupid smile on his face.
"A-actually I was go-going to get a black co-offee with th-hat?" It sounded more like a question than a statement but at least I got it out.
Connor humed, "Meeting up with some?". Now was my chance! I could do this I had practiced what I was going to say plenty of times.
Now all I have to do is get the words out, "Ac-actually I-I w-was ho-hoping you wo-would join m-me" I stumbled over most of my words so bad I was worried he wouldn't even understand what I was saying.
Instead he just said, "I would love to get coffee with you".
Phew, another chapter finished, so sorry there wasn't a chapter last week I was busy but i'll try to make it up by posting another chapter soon, as always thank you for reading!
