Chapter 4
I love rainy days. Especially when it's a holiday and you'll be staying in bed reading books and listening to indie music while drinking a hot cup of coffee and wearing thick sweaters and sweatpants and taking hot showers.
But today isn't a holiday. It's my first day on my job.
And also summer is coming. It wasn't supposed to rain.
I spent the whole weekend buying new materials and packing things that I will leave in my office and it didn't even cross my freaking mind to buy an umbrella. I searched my stuff in my unit but I guess I didn't really get to own one.
Now I stood under the awning of a jewelry shop beside the condominium, holding a box for my stuff. I stared at the busy streets of New York, looking for a cab as the rain fell harder. The honks of the car were irritating to my ears as the red light turned to green.
It was already 7:30 am on my watch and I was running late for my first job. Oh well, at least there's the rain if ever I get fired.
The rain became light after a couple of minutes later so I decided to look for a cab. Good thing I already woke up when the rain started because if not, I wouldn't be wearing pants for work. I put my jacket over my head then started towards the curb.
The cars started moving but there were no available cabs on the street. The traffic light turned red and all of them came to a halt.
I thought one driver was in too much hurry that he bolted up to the empty spot in front of me until I saw the driver's face.
Abort mission. I repeat, Abort mission and go run back to your house.
I widened my eyes when I saw Trevor Schmidt in an Audi R8 - I know because it was my brother's dream car.
Anyway, back to the main topic.
Holy guacamole. Trevor fucking Schmidt is in front of me. He was focusing on the road though but - holy shit - I should turn away now before he sees me embarrassingly soaking wet in the rain.
Well maybe he wouldn't recognize me since I'm a new employee in his office.
Maybe he does because his sister is my biggest fan.
I mean, what could go wrong if he sees me and recognizes me on the street? Maybe he could offer me a ride going to the office. That seems nice and convinient, right? Plus, you get to ride in an Audi with your handsome boss!
Okay, that's it. I'm going to walk.
Just as I was about to march away, Trevor turned his head towards me and rolled down the window.
"Paige?" He called.
I stopped on my tracks and swallowed. I turned to him with a fake smile. "Oh, Mr. Schmidt!" I greeted and walked back beside his car.
"Get in!" He immediately said before the rain started to fall hard again.
I didn't think about anything else anymore, I just ran to the other side of his car and went in before the red light turns back to green.
When Trevor started driving, he spoke. "Why were you out without an umbrella?" He worried.
I wore my jacket that was on my head. "I didn't have one, sir." I said, feeling embarrassed. Of course, who wouldn't be if you can't own a single freaking umbrella?
