Where was I? The thought rang out in my mind. I couldn't tell how long I was like this but it was getting annoying. My body felt sore, I wanted to open my eyes and get away from the dark. I hated the dark. It had started back when I was a little girl, Jackie used to bully me in the dark; tripping me, pushing me- I fell down the stairs once, luckily I just had a few scratches and a bruised ankle. My mom gave me beatings on top of it because, and I quote, "I was acting like an idiot". She didn't know how I fell down the stairs, she didn't ask and she didn't care. All she cared about was turning me into the sweet little girls that the rest of her girls were.
I felt like a burden to my family, they always groaned at the thought of me or whenever they looked at me. Back then there was so many things wrong with me,like I was skinny because I didn't eat well, but it wasn’t my fault, they never really fed me.
I heard the sound of a feminine voice, it was loud, as if she was in a quarrel. I could hardly make out what she was saying.
“…weeks! You’ve…hiding…from me…two weeks!”
I could hardly make out what she was saying, it was like I was fading in and out of consciousness. Why did they hide a secret from this girl?
“Don’t…me! I…this—”
I tuned her out, trying to make out what she was saying was tiring me out. I could feel myself slipping away, when was I going to wake up? What if I never do? I started to panic, I don’t want to be in this state forever! I trued to get my eyes to open. It took so much energy and nothing was happing, but I refuse to give up. I tried again, my eyes fluttered, but it took so much energy, I felt like going to sleep. I opened my eyes again, this time all the way, but I regretted it immediately. I closed my eyes quickly to shield them from the scorching light. I groaned out my hate towards it then tried turning my head to the side. My head fell to the side as if I was dead due to me not having full control over my body.
There were machines beside me, one making an annoying beeping noise. The color of the wall was white. I tried turning my head to the other side, grunting when I failed. When I succeeded, however, a small smile made it’s way on my chapped lips.
The door opened and a man and two women entered. I didn’t recognize any of them and they didn’t look like doctors and nurses.
“Oh thank goodness,” The brown haired, slim lady with a lot of tattoos on her skin said. She rushed towards me. “Gemma, you’re okay.” She took my hand in hers.
I stared at her face, searching it, but I couldn’t recognize this lady. I didn't know who she was.
She frowned. “Gemma, it’s me.”
My brows furrowed. “Who are you?” I croaked. I started coughing, my throat was so parched! I needed water. I tried swallowing my saliva to moisten my throat but it didn’t help.
“Here, drink this,” The only male in the room said. He handed me a bottom of water, I tried to reach for it but my hand was barely in the air when it fell back to my side limply. A beautiful caramel skin coloured lady, who was the other girl in the room, took the bottle from the man and placed it at my lips. I slowly openedy mouth and she tipped the bottle a little so water could rum down into my mouth.
The coolness of the water made me sigh in relief as it wet my parched throat. I observed the girls face, freckles dotted her nose bridge and below her eyes, her small nose fitted perfectly with her small face. Her brown eyes were so beautiful that it took some while for me to take my eyes away from hers, they were even more beautiful with the tears in her eyes. They were rolling silently down her cheeks. Why was she crying though? When I didn’t want anymore, she withdrew the bottle from my lips. I gave her a small smile.
