The weeks after Bryan's funeral blended into a big blur. Amelia did her best to function and get on with her life, but it was so hard. Just when she thought she'd get through the day without crying, she would find something of Bryan's and it would set her off all over again.
Ali made sure to keep Amelia busy, the busier she was, the better she seemed to get. She knew something else was bothering her friend, but she could never get it out of her. They both tucked into their work, getting the details of the cruise under way.
A week before the cruise, Amelia awoke to see the May sun shining in her window. Her hand immediately went to her stomach and she felt the small bump forming there. Soon, she would have to let her secret out, it wouldn't be that hard to hide any longer.
Today was her ultrasound and she would find out the sex of the baby and how far along she really was.
She dressed into a skirt and tank top and was glad that Ali was already at the studio. She drove downtown and parked in the garage and took the elevator to the 10th floor. She stepped off the elevator and walked down the hall to where glass double doors greeted her and the words. "Drs. Goodman and Warner OBGYN."
She walked through the double doors and walked into the huge waiting room and approached the receptionist. "Hi, I have an appointment."
The woman looked up from the computer and smiled. "Just sign in. Dr. Goodman will be with you shortly."
Amelia signed her name on the roster and sat down in a chair, her leg bouncing up and down. She began to chew her nails and almost jumped out of the chair, when her name was called.
She followed the medical assistant to the back and got weighed. She was led to the room and her blood pressure was taken. The girl smiled. "Dr. Goodman will be right in."
Amelia let out a huge sigh and got off the paper lined table and grabbed a magazine. After ten minutes, she threw the magazine down just as the door opened.
An older man with white hair stepped into the room. He was wearing black slacks and a white shirt. He looked at his chart. "Ms. Ellis! How are we feeling?"
Amelia sat back down on the table. "OK. Still tired and sick to my stomach."
Dr. Goodman smiled and grabbed the ultrasound machine. "OK, today we are gonna measure the baby and see when the actual due date is."
Amelia lied back on the table and let out a huge sigh as Dr. Goodman applied the gel to her stomach and turned on the machine. He looked at the screen. "Ahhh, there he or she is." He pointed at the screen.
Amelia turned her head to see the screen and she smiled. "Is he OK?"
Dr. Goodman smiled and moved the wand. "Baby is fine...OK...you look to be about 26 weeks, which means you conceived around the first of the year."
Amelia closed her eyes and swallowed a lump in her throat. "A..are you sure?"
"Yes.." He moved the wand. "Want to know the sex?"
Amelia opened her eyes. "Yes."
Dr. Goodman smiled. "It's a girl!!!" You are due September 6th." He pushed a button and the images printed out on the screen. "Now, I want you to make an appointment for one month. Hillary has the CD for you at the front." He handed her a couple of tissues and left her to get dressed.
Amelia sat up and wiped the goop off her stomach and pulled down her shirt. Dr. Goodman walked out of the room and she let out a slow breath. The baby was his. There was no doubt about it. New Year's Eve, she was sure of it.
