They're No Better

You went to work on Monday, the normal stuff. At some point, you found yourself wondering why you kept to the shithole of a job. Then you remembered that you couldn't exactly work anywhere else. Your experience was... limited.

You wondered where you would go if this place got shut down again. (Which it probably would, given it's sketchy history.) But that bridge was to be crossed another day. Right now, you had to keep this job. One: So you wouldn't starve, and two: for Mike, and the five murdered kids.

Mike told you that he planned on solving the entire case by himself, since the police had decided it was cold. They thought there was no helping it.

"I think otherwise!" Mike slammed his fist down onto the table.

Shouldn't he be at home... getting rest?

"Psssh, please." Mike flapped a hand up and down, grinning sheepishly. "You already know I sleep the entire way through the night. Nobody would want to rob this place, anyway."

You thought that Jeremy would tell him otherwise, (and he had a missing leg to show for it,) but you didn't say that.

After work, you soon found yourself laying your head on the foot of Vincent's bed, recounting Mike's plans.

You were a lot more comfortable with him now, at least when compared to before. You trusted him plenty more, that was for sure. You wanted to check up on him, to make sure he was okay, but it seemed in his absence from you he had already gone through four stages of guilt, and had long since arrived at acceptance. Before the current conversation, you inquired if he planned on getting the police to open a case on Scott's death. He seemed unusually opposed to it, which was surprising, considering how upset he was.

Anyway.

Vincent grinned with what seemed like nervousness. "Shouldn't he leave that to the actual authorities?"

You put your hands behind your head and shrugged. You weren't one to intervene. You figured at least someone was trying to serve justice to whoever deserved it. You couldn't imagine what kind of person would slaughter five children.

"I don't know. He probably regrets it."

You laughed a little, in spite of yourself, despite the macabre subject. He was sure to regret it when Mike came to beat his ass.

"That... wasn't what I meant by that, but sure." Vincent settled against the headboard of the bed.

You propped yourself up with your elbows, looking at Vincent around your knees. You quizzed him on what he did mean.

"Well..." Vincent raised and lowered his shoulders, maybe trying to act natural. "Maybe he didn't know what he was doing. I don't know." He seemed to have a more... aggressive bite to his tone.

You decided to stop pushing it and played it off. You laid back down, joking that it sounded like Vincent sure did know a lot about this murderer. Maybe Mike wasn't so far off in his accusation.
