She stopped and stared at me, seriousness in her eyes.

"I have to see Washington immediately."

The sun was starting to rose when we arrived back at camp. No one had talked for the entirety of the trip.

The moment we entered the camp borderline, people were staring at me. It was obvious now how I was a woman with only a jacket and thin shirt covering me. Despite their looks, I ignored them. I held my head up high and proud as I walked through the men.

We made a beeline straight for Washington's tent despite the attempts of our fellow soldiers trying to stop us and get answers as to why a woman is here.

When we entered, he stood up from his small desk and walked over to us.

"Where were you? What happened?"

None of us wanted to speak, but I was already in trouble so I decided to start.

"I was captured, sir. These men rescued me."

Lafayette spoke up.

"She escaped herself, Monsieur. We merely brought her home."

He put his hand up, signaling him to stop talking.

"What were you thinking?"

I swallowed. My mouth was dry.

"Fre- Laurens was shot. There were redcoats all around and we wouldn't have made it. I created a distraction allowing him to escape."

He paused and it was quiet for a long time. He appeared to be thinking.

I couldn't stand it any longer so I broke the silence despite the looks from my friends.

"Sir, I have important information. We need to act fast."

He dismissed the other men, leaving only us in the room. I suddenly got deja vu.

"Sir, I overheard the men talking about a large shipment of supplies and men coming in in two weeks. If we plan a way to stop them, they'll be-"

He stopped me.

"I want you to go see the medic. You are then ordered to go home."

My mouth hung open.

"But sir, I can be of use."

"You shouldn't have to fight."

"If this is because I'm a woman then-"

"I saw through your disguise the moment I laid eyes on you. I allowed you to stay because I wanted to know what we're capable of, but I was wrong. I put you in harms way and you paid for it."

I felt my face heat up.

"I'm willing to do this! I can help you plan. I can strategize. I'll help train troops. I'll help!"

"This isn't all my choice. The soldiers in the camp may not be as willing to accept you as I am."

"I can handle it."
