Chapter 14- Can't?

Jason's pov

I quickly pull free when my chest feels lighter. "Stop. I can't." I say shaken up. "Why not?" "Because you're... You... And... And I'm just a servant." "No you aren't. You may not be a king but you can be mine... If you want to be?" I sigh sadly. "Of course I do it's just..... I can't." "Well why the hell not?!" I sigh. I have to tell her. "Have you ever heard of the cholera outbreak in the early 1300s?" He looks confused but nods. "I've read about it in my history studies. Why are you bringing up something that happened almost 500 years ago." I walk over and kiss her, loving it more than anything. "Because my family died in that outbreak. That's when I sold my soul to the devil." Her eyes go wide. "Wait... You're over 500 years old?" I nod. "That's why I can't. If I do, I'll disintegrate." "Hmmm don't be so sure of that." She says with a smile. What's she gonna do? "The heavenly father is all about second chances." She says looking up to the ceiling. I'm confused. She kisses me again. I close my eyes, relishing in the happiness just her kiss brings me. "Goodbye Jason." She whispers confusing me. Especially how her voice gets further away. "Goodbye?" I ask confused. Everything fades to black. When I wake up, I'm laying on the dirt beside a river. A river I know well. A bucket lay off to the side. The river with the cholera bacteria in it. I stand up. My clothes have changed. I remember wearing these clothes when I was a teenager. And not just pretending to be one but when I was legitimately 17 years old. I run back to my house. It's still standing. Smoke rising from the chimney. Mother was there at wash basin. "Hey I thought I told you to fetch some water from the river." She says, looking over her shoulder. This is the day mother fell ill. She was washing dishes when she fell into the wash basin, getting the bacteria in her mouth. I grab her shoulder, gently pulling her back. "I'll cover the chores mama. You go relax. You've been on your feet all day." After I take care of the dishes, a little harder with the less water, I went into town and warned the townsfolk about the contaminated river water. I ran into a wild boar on the way home and made that for supper along with buttermilk mashed potatoes. Arty was the first to tell me how good it was. I smile, trying not to cry with happiness. I have my family back. I'm free.
