Chapter 5- Maxine

Jason's pov

"Why does my locket glow?" "Because that's now your source of power just like my staff. Something brought into the pentagram that wasn't your flesh and blood that the power could attach to." She looks out the window. The letters glowing red for a brief second. "What about my family?" I shrug. "Depends on if they accept you." I say, studying spells. She turns around. "If not?" I smile and look up at her. "We destroy them." I whisper. I toss her a leather jacket. "Put it on. To hide the scars." "What do these letters even mean?" Damn she asks too many questions. I was hoping that would be something she'd stop doing once she changed. "I won't answer that because that inscription should only be spoken in absolute desperation." I finally say, realizing I never answered her. "Well let's go." She says making me laugh. "What a go getter." I tease. "Well I've got this... Newfound energy." I smile. "First I must teach you how to use your amulet." "Amulet?" I can't keep a straight face. She's so confused. "Your necklace." I say pointing. "Oh." She blushes. "In my generation, we call them amulets." I say, grabbing my staff. "Wait, your generation? How old are you really?" "You don't wanna know." I say laughing.

*A few hours later*

I was finishing preparations when Miranda called me. "What?" I grumble annoyed. "It's... Maxine." She says. My eyes go wide. I walk to the window. I remember the condition. I can't hurt her family. "What do we do?" "I can't hurt her. You made a condition. You'll revert back to your old self if I break it." I say, tying some books together and putting them in my bag. "What do I do, Jason? I don't know what to do." Suddenly I hear the child knocking. "Miranda please answer!" She shouts. "Quit being such a scared child!" I growl shoving her towards the door. "He won't give you power until you prove you're worthy."  She opens the door. "Miranda we've got to go! You're not safe!" She cries pulling her arm. "I can't go with you, Max." I walk over, crossing my arms. "Run back to your father." I say, resting my hand on the heavy wooden door. "You're evil!" She shouts. I smile. "Yeah well so is your sister." I say smiling. She takes a step back. I grab hold of her amulet and open it. Her fire power unleashing. "Maxine!" She cries. "Now use your power!" "No! I don't want to hurt my sister!" Anger flares up in me. "THEN YOU ARE NOT READY!!" I yell smacking her in the face. "Do you want to go back to the weakling you were before?!" "No! I don't! I'm sorry!" She screams wrapping her hand around her amulet. She shakily stands up. "Maxine leave this place or face my wrath." She says making me smile. "Miranda." She whimpers, pointing. "Y-Your.... Your arms." Shit. I pull her jacket back up, heat radiating off of her. "That's my girl." I say smiling, seeing her eyes dark red. She fires a fireball at her. She screams  and runs away. "Hopefully the girl will spread a warning." I say crossing my arms. "A warning for what?" "Us my dear. Us." I say, grabbing her hand. "You and me we will go far."
