Ok so picture this: here I am sitting in front of my native food and my Mom sitting besides me teaching me how to eat with my hands and now I am seriously wondering; do they make cutleries in Nigeria? Or they just decide not to use it.
Anyways the world would never know...
" I give up it is hopeless" I said while trying to lick my hands.
"Hmm but it is so nice it is good to have a change of food." I said and it was obvious that my Aunty was happy at my comment.
Aunty Tireni stood up to help me get a fork from the Kitchen.
When she came back her and my Mom engaged in a conversation but this time in English.
"So my sister, where did you disappear to?" My Aunty asked my Mom.
"We relocated to America" my Mom answered her.
"Ehn" she jumped up from her seat.
"Ilu oyinbo /i-loo//o-yin-boa/ (land of the whites)." My Aunty said happily.
I was surprised at her action and I had to wonder is it that Nigerians don't travel to America. Anyways I pushed the thought away so I could continue listening to their conversation.
"Yeah the money that Toni gave me during his lifetime plus the money I got from his will was enough to take me and my daughter abroad." My Mom answered her.
My Aunty looked at me and said:
"Ahh Oluwapamilerinayo Faji/fah-ji/ ( a slang in Nigeria for enjoyment) lo wa (you are enjoying)." She said coming to me to take my hands while she danced round the room singing a song in her native language.

We finished eating and continued our conversation.  Then someone knocked on the door and when my Aunty went to open the door, a man was standing there holding an axe. I thought he was a killer or an assassin so I jumped out of seat and stupidly took a pillow to cover my head until my Aunty said:
"Relax, it is only my husband" .
Ok at least I know I am not going to get killed so it kinda calmed my nerves. Aunty Tireni explained that he was a farmer that was why he was carrying an axe and then she introduced us to her husband 'Akin'.
"It is a lie you mean your elder sister you were crying for every night is alive Oluwa lo se /O-loo-wah- loa -shai/  (God has done it)."
He came towards me and my Mom and pulled us into a hug.

After the introductions were over my Aunty noticed that her child was not here.
"Ah Oko mi( my husband) where is Ireoluwa(God's grace)? I thought she followed you to the farm" my Aunty said already getting worried.
"Ahn ahn I thought she stayed at home with you" her husband replied already getting angry.
"She snuck out of the house without our permission,Don't worry we would wait for her" Her husband replied angry.
Ok I have snuck out of the house twice to attend parties without my Mom knowing (well she never found out) and I didn't even get punished for that but why do I have the feeling something bad is going to happen.
The adults kept the conversation light while they were waiting for Ire ( Ireoluwa) to come home.

Ire my new found cousin came home in the night around 10:00pm and when she opened the door with her own spare key she thought she could sneak in and pretend she was at home all along but... that was not the case.
"Where have you been?" Her Father asked her angry.
She jumped from where she was at the door and started stammering.
"Um daddy....I-I went to the...farm".
So I am not an expert at lying but I knew she was telling lies but duh how could she be so dumb your dad just came back from the farm and he didn't see you there.
Then in the next second just like magic her Dad brought out a cane from under his chair and it left me wandering 'was it there all along'.
He stood up and took long strides to go and meet her where she stood.
"I would ask you again, Where did you go?" He said already boiling with rage.
"I... went to....Kayode's house" she said stammering.
Wow very wrong answer to tell your Dad you went to a guy's house without his permission. Then in the next second the unspeakable happened!!!!!!!

I know you guys think of me right now as a mean person, well this chapter is to show you how much Nigerian parents care about discipline. They will always love you and care for you as their children but you have to understand that because they love you doesn't mean they will tolerate it when you go against their rules, so they discipline you with 'love'.
So this chapter is dedicated to those Nigerian children who think their parents hate them, when their parents are trying to discipline them and show them the right thing to do. So my advice for you today is to reflect upon your actions and understand that your parents discipline you with love.
