If freedom is simply being able to do what you want, are animals freer than humans?
Ibis: No. Humans are just as free as animals, if not more so. Humans have the power to to whatever they want, within considerable reason, while animals do not necessarily have such capabilities- or, at least, not to the same extent as humans. For example, humans are capable of complex cognitive thought and activities, something that animals lack, for the most part. This intellectual advantage enables us to do and create more unique and diverse things relative to what animals are capable of. So, in the sense of cognitive ability and overall thought processes, I believe humans are less limited, allowing us more freedom in that aspect.
Now, if freedom is defined as being able to do what one wants, then aren't all living things capable of thought given freedom, in addition? Humans are just as able of choosing what they should do as animals are- the main difference between the two is the fact that our morals and conscious awareness inhibit and regulate just how much we should be allowed to do, while animals lack this. For example, a human can just as easily defecate a neighbor's yard as an animal, yet we do not do this. Does this necessarily mean that we are slaves who lack the freedom animals do? I suppose that if you wanted to do that but your fear of social humiliation held you back from performing such an activity, then you could take the form of slave. However, you'd only be a slave to yourself, since you were the only one holding yourself back from doing such an odd thing. Animals lack the self control(to some degree) that human's possess. So I guess, in a way, that humans are more of a slave to their conscious than animals are, cause we are capable of logically assessing and thinking about our actions and their various repercussions.
