Meanwhile, in a library at the other end of the city, Klaus sat, hidden behind a mountain of books concerning textiles and a strategically placed pot plant.
Why was he hiding?
Because Captain Lena Jones of the damn city police was probably trying to find him.
Either that or she was about to text him.
Suddenly, as if by magic, his phone went off loudly, declaring to the entire library and probably anyone in a three mile radius of the place that he had a text.
Blushing a deep red, Klaus pulled out his phone from under about ten books to see that he had finally been contacted by Lena.
Red-blue-go-flash-flash
Hey Klaus, it's me. TJ's in hospital.
Get here ASAP.
And I swear to god if my name on your phone is still Red-blue-go-flash-flash I will kill you.
Klaus grinned at the text, remembering the day when're he had first met Lena.
Three years before, when TJ had introduced them to each other, she had said she was in the police, and Klaus had been taken aback by the fact someone so short could be a police woman, but Lena thought he was confused, so had simply said the words "You know, police cars? Black and white? Loud noises? Red blue go flash flash?" Since then, every time Klaus had got her contact, he would set it as those words.
Quickly, Klaus put the books back into their spots on the shelves before running out the door as fast as he could without making it obvious that he was a super.
On the bus to the hospital, Klaus lent his head against the cool glass of the window. He didn't know how he would act around TJ after what happened. Seeing the boy so small and helpless in that road, his eyes so wide and scared; Klaus needed to protect him. He loved him. He loved TJ, and had been oblivious till that moment. Klaus felt so stupid for not realising. How was he going to tell TJ?
He arrived at the hospital an hour later, fully prepared to confess his love to the other boy, only to find Lena, if full uniform, flirting with a doctor in the waiting room. The doctor was twirling her hair and looking at Lena through long lashes and Klaus almost died from how cute the scene was.
Lena looked up to see Klaus, then tried to excused herself from the pretty doctor, but before Lena could go, the other girl quickly got out a piece of paper and scribbled something on it, slipped it into Lena's pocket, whispered something in the police woman's ear before hurrying off, blushing like mad behind her clipboard.
Lena strutted over to Klaus, the boy grinning at her new found extra confidence.
"Someone's happy, looks like my date offer really has been turned down." Klaus joked. Lena just laughed.
"Trust me Klaus, it wouldn't have worked out anyway." She said as she began walking him to TJ's hospital room.
"I know." Klaus answered. Lena stopped walking.
"Pardon?" She said, surprised. Klaus turned around, smiling again.
"Can I ask you something?" He said. Lena nodded.
"Yeah, sure."
Klaus took a deep breath.
"Will you allow me to ask TJ to be my boyfriend?"
Lena's face exploded into the biggest smile he had ever seen. Tears started streaming down her face and she launched herself onto the boy, sobbing as she said "Yes, yes Klaus, oh my god, do it!"
Klaus smiled, hugging her back, before gently putting her down, ruffling her hair affectionately. Lena smiled, wiping her eyes.
"Come on!" She said happily, and started leading the way to TJ's room.
When they arrived, nothing could prepare Klaus for how the blond looked. He was laying on the hospital bed, wearing a hospital gown and hooked to a heart monitor. His eyes were closed and every so often, his face flashed with discomfort.
Klaus ran foreword, almost jumping on the other boy, and hugging him tightly. Klaus didn't know why this was so hard for him to see, even though he had already seen TJ with the same injury's less then an hour earlier. TJ could feel Klaus shaking slightly as he clung to him, and the blond smoothed his hand over the other's back.
Klaus looked up at TJ. He took a deep breath before saying something that would change TJ's life forever.
"TJ. I think I've fallen in love with you."
