"Just one chance to explain myself is all I ask."

Cora waved to Michelle as she walked up to her house, returning from hanging out with her. The evening had been refreshing, in a sense. She spent 2 hours with Peter at the cafe, laughing and talking. He didn't have to purposely comfort her, he just naturally did it. His presence alone was comforting for Cora, a form of reassurance that even though her mother was back, everything was going to be okay. He didn't even have to say anything, but he knew, and so did she.

Michelle was great to be around because not only did Michelle love Cora like a sister, but her whole family loved Cora as if she were their own. Michelle's older brother was protective over her like he was to Michelle, and her younger sister admired her in a way as she did with Michelle. In the summer, Cora practically lived there.

Opening the door to her house, she quietly shut it behind her and set her bag in the ground. Taking off her jacket and gloves she put them away before picking up her bag, heading to the stairs.

"Cora?"

Cora froze in her strides, hearing her mother's tired voice through the room, coming from the kitchen. She let our a heavy sigh before turning to face her, looking at her where she was sitting at the island.

"Yes?" She asked, adjusting her bag on her shoulder. It was around 9:40pm now, and she had been hoping her mother would be sleeping.

"I wanna talk to you." Jaquie said, watching her daughter cross her arms and shift her weight onto one leg. Jaquie could tell Cora had developed an attitude over the years, but it wasn't disrespectful. It was one that made her realise right away that Cora wasn't buying any bullshit that she was about to spill.

"About?"

Jaquie sighed, tapping her fingers against the coffee mug she held. "I want to go out to dinner with you, tomorrow. Just one chance to explain myself is all I ask." She said, watching her face tense and her light brown eyes narrow.

"Dad has to work all the time to make ends meet. We don't have the money for a night out for dinner."

"I'll pay." Jaquie said, hating how much Cora knew about what went on in the house.

"And where is your money flowing in from?" Cora asked curiously, her expression still stern. She had no respect for this woman at the counter, she would question her all she wanted.

Her mother sighed, "don't worry about it. Just be home by 6 tomorrow. We are going out."

Cora only rolled her eyes in response, before turning and going up the stairs with heavy steps. She went into her room and shut her door, getting changed into an oversized sweater and Nike pros for bed.
