"This isn't Peter, darling."

Cora felt as if she was defeated. Nothing happened to Michelle on Wednesday, or her.. Nothing had happened. If something had, it slipped right under her nose.

Cora hadn't spoken or seen Peter since Wednesday, and she just suspected that he was sick or on some business trip with Tony Stark. But when he wasn't answering his texts, or his phone calls, she got that feeling again. Except this time, it was the something had already happened, and it slipped right through her fingers.

Jaquie had also been nearly MIA since last Monday, just coming home a couple times a day before leaving without explanation. Every time she would leave, Cora would get the feeling that she had when Peter wasn't answering his phone, or showing up at school. It worried her. Scratch that, it absolutely terrified her that there was any possibility something had happened to Peter, and it had blind sided her. This feeling that she had was something new, and she didn't have it before she gained her powers. She also hadn't experienced it up until this point, so it was definitely something new that had developed with her powers.

On Saturday, she still kept close contact with Michelle, making sure she sent her now hourly texts. Michelle had also noticed Peter's absence, and told Cora the Deca team was spamming him in the team groupchat, but they still hears nothing from him. Even Michelle was worried, and that said something.

When Peter still hadn't texted her back by Saturday noon, or anyone for that matter, Cora decided to go to his apartment. It wasn't hard for her to slip out the door, since Jaquie wasn't home and her sister and father were entirely out of loop.

On the way to his apartment, Cora was praying to God he was just sick and not allowed on his phone, or that he was on a business trip with Stark and didn't have service. She hoped it was the latter, because she didn't really want him sick either.

As she walked down the sidewalk that lead to his apartment building, she feeling that something happened just grew, and grew. It was going to swallow her whole if she didn't know why she had it. Her strides were long and quick, going as fast as she could without it seeming unnatural.

When she reached the building, She rushed inside and sighed in the slightest of relief when the elevator doors were open, and she carefully slipped in with the few people who had originally been waiting for the elevator. It carried her up to his floor and she stepped off, nearly running down the hall at full speed to his door.

"Please be here.. Please be here.." Cora mumbled to herself, the feeling spreading from her chest to down her arms and hips. It felt as if she was being compressed by two metal blocks, her body tight and stiff. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door and anxiously waited for someone to open the door.

May had been sitting on the couch, flipping through one of the many books in the apartment. When she heard the knock, it made her jump slightly. They hadn't had anyone here since Cora's date with Peter, and it it was Peter, he could've just walked in. She set down the book and stood up, walking over and opening the door, and she saw Cora. She looked stressed and worried, her face tense and arms crossed.

"Hey Cora, I haven't seen you in a while." May smiled, having heard just days before that they were talking again, and that once she had everything figured out, she had promised Peter a date. "What's up?" She asked, leaning against the doorframe.

"Um.." Cora started, "is.. is Peter here? We were supposed to work on something." She said, not wanting to worry May. It seemed as if she had no idea Peter was gone, or maybe she did and she knew why.

May shook her head, "no, he's been at Stark HQ the last few days. Some kind of emergency project with the big Stark man." She said with a shrug. May knew of his Spider-Man antics, but she also knew that Cora didn't know, so she called them business trips. "when he comes home I'll make sure he gives you a call, okay?" She asked with a small smile, and Cora returned it.

"Yeah, of course. Thanks May, I'll see you later." She said, and May said goodbye before Cora rushed off.

As Cora walked down the sidewalk again, her phone began ringing in her pocket. Pulling it out, She saw Peter's contact flashing across the screen, with his contact picture displayed, Peter smiling at something in the photo. She quickly answered, pressing it up to her ear.

"Peter?"

"This isn't Peter, darling."

Cora froze at the sound of her mother's voice, and she ducked into a close by alleyway so she could focus on the conversation. Her mind was racing. How did she have his phone? Why did she have his phone? Where the hell was she? More importantly, where the hell was Peter?

"Why do you have his phone?" Cora asked, her voice demanding and cold.

"Why do you think?"

Cora stayed silent.

"Cora, when I told you that you would lose something dear to you, I didn't mean something you loved. You've been protecting the wrong person this whole time."

"Peter is not a thing, Jaquie. He's a someone. You're not very scary when you can't even speak properly." Cora said, gripping the phone so tight she was probably going to smash it.

"Do you go really think that right now is the time to get sassy with me, missy?"

"What're you gonna do?" Cora scoffed, even though she was still scared. Never let them know you're scared. It makes you inferior, and vulnerable.

"Let me just say one thing, Cora.."

There was a long pause, and Cora had to check to make sure she hadn't hung up. Cora jaw tensed as she waited, her body shaking from nervousness. The feeling of the compression because something was wrong had disappeared, but it left her shaken and nervous. The next words that left her mother's mouth were the ones that would make her go insane, and there was no way she was complying to her rule of no more Violet Knight. She couldn't.

"Peter may not be a thing, but his life is."
