Introduction

“Chasity, you’re being selfish here. What about your fans? The people who look up to you the most? They want to know the backstory of your success! How can they do that when you won’t take the offer?” Zeke, one of my childhood best friends, told me, trying to convince me to change my mind, despite how many times I’ve told him ‘no’; he just wasn’t giving up.

I sighed, shaking my head, coming to the conclusion that he wouldn’t understand exactly why I wasn’t budging. I was truly scared –no, make that terrified –of stepping foot back into the Glendale projects.

Not after what I did, especially.

“You don’t understand, Z.” I whispered, barely audible. I stood up from the crème colored couch to close the door of my private dressing room, steering clear of the eavesdroppers that could’ve possibly been lurking around. “I can’t go back there, I just can’t. Hopefully, they’ll understand.”

Zeke slammed his fist down hard on the glass coffee table that separated us. The table shook a little after he removed his now reddened fist. “I really don’t understand you, Chasity. You’re claiming that you would do anything to please your fans, but right now, you’re being downright selfish, not to mention it’s going against your word.”

I raised my eyebrow, curious. “What word?”

Zeke rolled his eyes, clearly out of irritation. “And I quote, “I would do anything for my fans, anything that will keep them happy, I wouldn’t think twice about doing it.”

I slowly closed my eyes to keep from displaying my sudden embarrassment. Those were my exact words from a recent interview I did a couple weeks back. Good one, Zeke. Good one.

“How long am I required to stay there?” I asked, slowly giving in. In the beginning, I was sure that I wasn’t going to give in, firmly standing my grounds, but if this documentary means that it will make my fans, the realest supporters in the my life, happy, then it was something that I was willing to do. Even it means re-living my horrible past.

“If I’m not mistaken, you have to stay there for six months.” My heart dropped to the pit of my stomach, and immediately, butterflies took over. And not so much the good ones either.

I placed a fake smile on my face and clapped once, adding on to my false enthusiasm.  “Well, call Mr. Tyler Perry, it looks like I’m doing the movie.”
