The paranoia was in full effect. Every few minutes, I would look out the window to see if anybody or anything, specially Chance, was lurking around somewhere. It hadn't been over 24 hours since I stole the money and I had this feeling that I was being watched and that if I wasn't aware and cautious of my surroundings, I could possibly walk into a trap or something.
Living in fear wasn't on my agenda and not only did I put myself in risk of danger, but I had put my entire family's safety at risk. When Chance, finds out, if he ever finds out, that I was the one who stole from him, he was going to make my life a living nightmare. He wasn't the type to just hit
He would slowly put me through what felt like a lifetime of misery and fear just to prove a point.
"That's weird..." My mother had entered the living room with a curious look on her face, our house phone placed between her shoulder and ear. "Are you sure that you can't tell me who paid this all off? These bills added up to a be a lot; who'd pay a bill this big for me?"
After getting the money, I divided it evenly to help pay the bills at least for this month, paid off some of the utilities and debt that my mother owed and brought us a few groceries for the month.
I had sent the money in under my mother's name in hopes that there wouldn't be too many questions asked, but I should've known that she would start to ask questions, becoming curious as to why the $500 rent was completely paid off as well as all of the utilities. She and I both knew that she didn't have the money to pay off that large sum of money, but, I played it off, acting just as surprised as she was.
"Alright, well thank you." She ended the phone called and placed the phone on the table. "Well, it looks like the rent and bills are completely paid off for the month and according to the utilities people, I no longer owe them anything. All of my debt, plus the late fees, etc. has been paid off; whoever left them that money basically paid off everything that I ever owed them."
Her voice was an excited filled one, but the doubt was still evident. Knowing her, she would keep pestering herself to figure out who was behind this and won't stop until she does find out.
"That's great..." I responded with a slight shrug. "Now, that way, you don't have to worry about meeting the deadline for the rent or us getting evicted out of our place."
She looked at me with a skeptical look, but quickly disappeared as soon as it came. "Yeah, you're right, I guess." She replied, taking a seat down on the couch. "I just need to relax..."
Picking my magazine back up, I started flipping through the pages aimlessly, not bothering to read them. "Oh and before I forget, a boy named Chance called here earlier asking for you."
My heart rate picked up at the mention of his name. "What did he want?" Closing the magazine, I tossed it on the table and gave my undivided attention.
"He said something about getting some notes from you from school and that he'll meet up with you in the morning at your locker to get them...I'm not sure, he was talking fast as hell, couldn't understand really him. You should probably call him back."
I nodded my head, knowing fully well that I wasn't going to call him, for mainly one reason. I just had a bad feeling about it. My gut just wouldn't let me do it, which was why I was planning on skipping school tomorrow. Laying low was the only thing I could do until I get all of the money back.
And to make matters worse, I still had no idea on how I was going to make that money back.
"You know that feeling when you try time after time after time to do the right thing, to have a good heart, to be willing to forgive people of all the wrong they've done but it just seems like it all backfires on you and in the end it's you that always that portrayed as the bad guy?"
