Chapter 4

Ashley POV

I ran and caught him up. "Hey, what happened?" I asked.

"I just need opinion" he said. I looked shocked at him.

"Did Dr. Conrad Hawkins just ask for my opinion?" I asked. He smiled.

"I'd like to give Devon Independence day" he said.

"Okay..." I said. He looked at me wanting me to tell something.

"You want me to say something?" I asked. "I thought you were gonna say no" I chuckled.

"Why would I say no. Your his Resident" I said. "I thought we were sharing him"

"Okay. I'm fine with giving him Independence today" I said. He laughed.

"What, you seriously thought I was gonna stop you? He gets the best out of you" I said.

"Yeah, yeah he does. And I thought you will be a great Resident" he said.

"I am" he looked at me. "I am a great Resident. But I'm not the best. And the best one is standing right in front of me" I said.

He scoffed. "You know that's not true" he said.

"Oh..no no no....it's completely true" I said patting his chest and walking away.

I walked past a room where I saw Devon sitting tired. I knocked a few on the door.

"Is it the Independence day?" I asked. He nodded his head vigouresly.

"Let me give you something to boost. No one ever has won it before. So, if you do it everyone's gonna drop his jaw." He looked at me.

"I know you want that. So get your ass out from there and work" I said walking away.

My phone beeped. It was a text from Nic.

"You've got to be kidding with me" I huffed.

"Get off my way, Hawkins!" I shouted.

"Right, second name. Your angry, I understand" he tried.

"Really!? Thank you for understanding. Now get off my way" I shouted again.

"Look we cannot do anything alright!" He shouted at the peak of his voice which immediately shut me off. Everyone around looked at us.

"Everytime something happens, you go out there right in front. You cannot change everything  happening around you." he shouted.

I gave him a hard look. "Fine, I will not try to change everything happening around me" I said in a very harsh tone walking out.

That was it. I never saw or talked to Conrad after that. Half a day was already gone.

I was checking Lily with Devon. "You're white blood cell count is improving Lily, but still a bit slower than we'd like to see" I said.

"I think you need to stay here a little longer" Devon said.

"No, please, Dr. Pravesh. I just want to go home. Dr. Hunter already said that I could" Lily said.

"Ash please" she pleaded. "Dear, I'm sure she has not seen your recent numbers. Your immune system is badly compromised, Lily."

"You could easily get another infection and end up in ER again" Devon added.

Just then Hunter entered. "How you feeling, darling?"

"Better, really so much better"

"Well no fever" Hunter said. "She had one today morning" I said.

"Exactly, that's why I'm trying to discharge her as soon as possible" she said.

"But I..." She cut me off. "Lily's likely to get another infection here than at home. One of the seven patients end up with a hospital based infection" I just looked at her.

I was clearly not in the mood to argue." We'll do as you say Doctor" I said handling the reports to Devon and walked out.

I'm having a pretty bad day. I walked down where I found Nic.

"Hey, someone wants to see you" she said. I followed her. It was Micah getting ready for his surgery. I smiled at him.

"Good luck Micah"

"Thank you Ashley" he said as they strolled him.

"You don't look good" she said. "Is it Conrad?" She asked.

"I'm sorry to say. But I hate your guy" I said.

"He's not my guy" she said. "Don't try with me Nic" I said.

"No, trust me. He's not. Lately we've had our distances" she said.

"Fine..don't start with me again" I said. "Hey can you do me a help?"

"What?" She asked.

"Just get me the files of Lily. I would like to have a check over" I said.

"Yeah, it wouldn't be a problem" she said.

Conrad's POV

I was waiting for her near her car. She made out off the hospital and walked towards her car.

She noticed me and gave out a loud scoff. She walked towards her car door.

"Look I know you're mad" I tried. "Not now Conrad. I'm totally worn out" she said.

"Ash...please. I should have not shouted at you like that. You were trying to stop something wrong happening. But..." She cut me off.

"You don't have to apologize. Bell always finds a way. I should have stayed down" she said.

"No..Ash..."

"Con...go. I'm not angry with you" she said. I smiled.

"What do you mean not angry? Come on Ash, don't play nice with me" I said.

"No, I'm good. We're good. And moreover staying mad at you is literally impossible" she said smiling.

I laughed out. "What?" She asked.  "You..you just don't stop to impress me" I said pulling her wrapping my hands around her.

Ashley POV

He just pulled and wrapped his hands around me.

I am sure my heart beat has not been this rapid since the day I was born. I slowly hugged him back.

"We are going for a drink. Wanna join?" He asked.

"No, the 'I'm tired' part was not a lie" I said. We stood there not awkward.

"So...I'll meet you tomorrow" I said. He looked down nodding and made way to get inside my car.

"Oh..and by the way. Devon is crushing your Independence day" I said. "Well I'm his mentor" he said proudly.

"You should see your face" I got inside the car.

"Goodnight Con"

"Goodnight Ash"

I ignited my car and drove forward. I looked through the mirror to still see him standing there looking at my car.

He has no idea what he just did to me. And he has no idea how much effect he has on me.
