Chapter 18

Ashley POV

"I don't think you've formally met yet. Priya, this is Dr. Conrad Hawkins, Dr. Ashley King and Nic Nevin" Devon introduced us.

"Thank you for helping us, Priya" Nic thanked.

"Of course" Priya said. "Priya is a journalist, and she's researching a cancer cluster for a story. I asked if she could find any information on Dr. Hunter's patients" Devon said.

"I used social media posts to find people Dr. Hunter treated, and I ended up talking to 15 people" she said.

"What did you find?" I asked. "All if them had good things to say about Dr. Hunter. Many repeated the same line 'She saved my life'"

"Did any of the patients have health problems that we're caused by the doses?" Devon asked.

"Two had heart damage. One was infertile. Bone density decreased. One man lost all his teeth" she informed.

"None of that is unusual with chemo" Conrad said.

"The most amazing thing I found was four patients had a total remission for cancer that are considered incurable" Priya said.

All of us shared a look.

"Total remission for cancer that are considered incurable? I'm not believing that" I said as me and Conrad walked together.

"Miraculous cures can be used to justify her doses" he said. I didn't say anything. He came and stood in front of me.

"Ash, I talked to her. She seemed genuinely crushed by the error she almost made with Lily. She cried, Ash" he said.

"She cried? Seriously Con....that's making you believe her. What if I cry right now, saying that she is giving wrong treatment for Lily? Will that make you believe me completely?" I asked him.

"I believe you..." I cut him off.  "No..don't do that to me. She's your mentor and I know what it means to you. She's a reputed Doctor and she makes millions for Chastain...I get it alright?" I said.

"I get that it's hard to believe it. And I'm not telling you to. Just give me sometime. Cause whatever way I'm trying to get her, she keeps on and on slipping. Just give me sometime, please" I said.

He gave a small nod. I turned around and walked away. I should find something before she kills other patients.

I entered Catherine's room and found her resting so slowly retreated my steps.

"Dr. King" she called. "I'm sorry. You were resting. And congratulations" I said.

"I cannot thank you enough Doctor." She said. "You can call Ash. And you must thank Conrad. He's the one who's taking good care of you" I said.

"He's so different now. He's nothing like the guy I almost married" she said.

"What was he like?" I asked. "He was a wild man. A real rebel. Which was, um....part of the appeal" she said. I smiled.

"But he was always emotionally distant. He, um..... wouldn't let me in" she said.

"He has not changed, I guess" I replied. "No, he has. He's so, um....so grown up and responsible...and gentle"

"Because your his patient" I said. Both of us chuckled.

"How long have you been in love with him?" She asked. I gave her a surprised look.

"You're um.....you're wearing the ring he gave you. Belonged to his mother." I looked the ring in my finger.

"Did you know that?" I shook my head saying 'no'. "He loved her very much. You must mean a great deal to him" she said.

"It's been only a few day since we are together" I said. "I did stop our marriage. But he's a very good guy. You're lucky" she said. I replied with a smile.

The pagers started beeping. "What is it?" I asked.

"Catherine's labs." Conrad said. "Not good. Her white count and lactate. Her bowels are being strangulated" Devon said as we ran towards her room.

When we entered her room to see her struggling with pain.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa,whoa"

"Help me" she cried. "She's tachy at 137. BP's dropping. Diffuse gaurding" I said.

"I think her intestines are getting ischemic. She needs emergency exploratory surgery" Conrad said.

"Con, Bell's on the call" I said. "Damn it" Both mine and Conrad's pagers started beeping.

"I'll get Nic here and see that" I said to Conrad. "I'll assist Ash" Devon said as we walked outside to ER.

Lily got strolled in. We ran towards her. "Lily Kendall. They were called to her home. She's hypotensive, vomiting. They're having a hard time getting her blood pressure up with fluids" Irving informed us.

"Lily.. Lily.. we're here alright" I tried. "She thinks it's a reaction to chemo this morning" the nurse informed.

"What's her IV access?" Devon asked. "She got 22 in her hand." Irving said.

"It's going really slow. We couldn't get another line. She feels cold. Place a large bore antecubital line and bowl in two liters" I said.

"Send off a lactate and blood cultures. Grab cafepine to cover for sepsis" Devon said as they took her away for aiding.

"I need a warming blanket over here" Irving shouted.

"How is she?" Hunter asked rushing in. "She's in shock" I replied. Nic came in.

"Nic get Jude. He's doing Catherine's surgery" I said.

"He has a day off" she replied. "Get him only for the surgery. I'm not allowing Bell near Catherine" I said.

The nurses left Lily's room and I entered. She looked so pale and weak.

"Ash, I'm scared" she said. I said beside her. "It's alright. I'm here alright. You're in safe hands" I said placing a hand in head.

"I could have died. Ash, I want to live. I want to live more. Have kids" she said crying.

"Lily..you are gonna have it. You will live your life you want to" I said taking her hands.

"Save me.....Save me Ash" she said. I looked at her in pity not knowing what to answer.

Im trying everything I can. But Lane's just too lucky!
