Chapter 19

Ashley POV

Catherine was going through the surgery. I was going to check it when I heard someone calling me from behind.

"Dr. Hunter" I said. "Ashley, Lily's been pretty shaken up from today. I'm trying everything I can to help her. But, you're her favourite....."

".....see that you be by her side all the time. She needs you" she said. I gave a half smile.

"I like discuss further treatments for Lily. Guess you're okay with assisting me. Meet me today evening. We'll talk" she said.

"Yeah, sure" I replied. She gave a nod and walked away. God knows what she's planning.

I again went in search of Conrad when he came running out of the OR. More like bursting out of the OR.

He came running towards me. "Hey, everything alright?" He didn't answer but pulled me with him into the scan room.

He took the keyboard in his hand and put up all the scans of Catherine. "Con, what's happening?"

"Tell me, if you can find anything. She has her abdomen filled with blood due to bleeding" he said in a hurried voice.

"Okay..okay..calm down" I tried. "NO, I CAN'T ASH! WE ARE LOOSING HER!" he shouted.

The scans all came up and both of us looked at them keenly trying to find something.

The last scan popped and and I found it. "Conrad, look at this" I said.

"She has an ectopic. It must have ruptured" I said.

"No, it's an intrauterine pregnancy" he said.

"No..no.She has both. There's a second pregnancy in the right tube. OB missed it"

He looked at the scan. "Go, tell the surgeons to check the pelvis" I said.

He placed the keyboard down. "GO!" I shouted and he did. He ran as fast as he could into the OR.

I saw Conrad and went near him. They were taking Catherine back to her room.

"Is she alright?" I asked. "Yeah" he replied.

"Her condition was super rare. One in 100,000?" I asked.

"Mina's gonna write in up as a case report" he said. "Lily?"

"She's doing better" I said. I kept fiddling with the ring in my finger.

"Hey, Conrad?"  He looked at me. "When did your mom, give you this ring?" I asked. He looked down.

"When I left for Afganistan" he replied. "Why didn't you tell me it belonged to hers?"

"I wanted you to feel like it was yours alone. She said, 'Give it to the love of your life'" he said.

I looked at him while he did the same. "You earned it" he said. The love for this guy keeps on an on increasing for me.

I wrapped my hands around him tightly. He kissed my cheek and hugged me.

"You should go home. You've had a long shift" he said. I unwrapped myself from him.

"Yeah. Lane told me to come to her office. Said she needs to talk about Lily's treatment." I said.

"That's good. Maybe she believes you now." He said.

"Yeah, I'll see what I can do. You're here all night?" I asked.

"Yeah, there's Lily and Catherine. I'll be there for both" he said. I nodded turning around to go to Lane's clinic.

"Hey, Ash!" He called. I looked at him. "Thank you, if not you, Kate wouldn't be alive" he said.

"That's what I do" I winked at him. I turned again and walked towards Lane's office.

Just as I was about to enter she rushed out. "Ash, oh dear. I'm sorry. Something came up" she said.

"It's totally fine doctor. I'll catch up with you tomorrow morning" I said.

"Thank you. Oh and here they are" she said handing me a file.

"Lily, recent results. I told the nurse to take it after she was admitted today" she said.

"Thank you, Dr. Lane. I'll see to it." I said. "You're a very good doctor Ashley. Lily is lucky to have someone like you" she said.

I gave her a half smile. "I'll see you tomorrow" she said walking away.

That's totally wierd. She never gets along with me. I entered into Lily's room to find Nic.

"Hey, what are you doing here? I thought Lane got you off Lily" I said.

"Yeah, but she came back to me today and told me that I can treat her" she said.

"She's up to something. I mean, she was all medley with me saying how much Lily needed me" I said waving my hands.

"What's that file?" She asked. "Oh, she gave them to me. The results of Lily after she got admitted" I said opening it.

Only one thing got my eye. Lily had very low potassium levels.

"Nic, get potassium in Lily. Her levels are low. Her heart could fail. Just put it down slowly through the entire shift" I said.

"Yeah, I'll do it" she said. I looked at Lily to see her peacefully sleeping with a puppy in her hand.

"Aww...she got one too?" I asked. "Yeah, Cookie wandered off and ended up here. Lily wanted to take him" she said.

"That's nice" I said and walked out.

I was going through Lily's file. The dosages were actually normal. More here and there but that is not enough to prove that she's doing insurance fraud.

My pager started to beep and I took it to see it was Lily. I immediately rushed to her too to see doctors and nurses already there.

Conrad shouting inside. I ran in to see her struggling to breathe.

"What happened?" I asked putting my Steth. "Possible chemo induced cardiomyopathy" Dr. Bradley said.

"Go get her admission EKG. Bolus 150 of amino and start a drip" Conrad ordered.

The machine started to beep faster. "Con, were lost her pulse. Charge to 200" I said.

The nurses did. "Ready, Clear" they defibrilated her. Still no pulse.

"She was stable. She's in V fib. Get an epi. Call for a stat echo. Hold CPR" I said.

They charged her once again. "Still in V fib on the monitor" I looked at Conrad giving him a worried look.

"Charge to 300" he said. The nurses did and charged her, no pulse.

"We are losing her. Charge to 360" I shouted.

"Ready. Clear!" No pulse. "Ash, that was out third round" Bradley said.

I looked at Lily. "No no, this can't be happening". Tears flowed down my face. "Push 100 of lodicaine and shock again at 360" Conrad shouted.

Still no. "Asystole" the nurse said. "No, no no no....we need to get her back. GET HER BACK!" I shouted. Conrad climbed on to the bed giving her a epi.

He gave everything he can. But I knew she was gone. She was gone.

I walked out of the room not able to anymore. I entered into a room and my legs gave on. I fell on the couch crying heavily.

She's gone. And she's not coming back. Lily's gone. Loud cries erupted from my mouth.
