Emptiness lingers disquieting in his chest all day.

All day Louis hasn't replied to him. That was unusual, to say the least.

Has his phone died? Has he found out already? Is something wrong? Maybe he needs space.

Sitting on a bench in front of the school gates as he awaits for the bus to come and take him home so he can fall headfirst onto his cold bed, he spots a female figure coming his way from the corner of his eye.

Her hair was tied up in a high ponytail, but he couldn't forget her face even if he tried.

"Hey, how are you?" Lauren says, hopeful jade eyes fixed on his. They immediately remind him of Louis', although there was no one who could look at him the way Louis did.

"I'm good." He lies, not only because he didn't want to bother her with his issues but also because their relationship wasn't at a stake he'd confess things of that level of seriousness. "And you?"

"Me too." Her lips form a sweet smile. "I saw you in the hallway this morning. You seemed upset."

God! Whenever I want people to care, they don't, but right when I want to be invisible, everyone notices. I'm cursed.

"Yeah, it was a thing of the moment." He shrugs, fingers fiddling with the strap of his satchel. "It's all sorted out now, though."

"Would you happen to want to grab a coffee or something to eat? Whenever you can. If you want to, of course."

The growling engine of the bus behind him alerts him that his ride home had arrived. No, it wasn't like his most recent ones - in Louis' luxury vehicles and a warm company throughout -, but it was what he had left when Louis was gone.

"Yes, sure." He promises, standing up so he's facing her. "I'll have to go home now. I have a ton of homework and studying to finish. But I'll text you."

"Alright, cool. Lauren nods then smiles to the ground. "Have a good rest of day."

"You too. Bye!"

The ride home isn't like any previous other.

With his earphones plugged in at the back of the bus, playing the Dangerous Woman album, he feels completely apathetic to everything going on around him.

He lays his elbow on the window sill and tries his best not to think about Louis or the whole situation and utterly focus on each song for now filling the temporary silence in his mind.

Tries.

He fails after three minutes and seventeen seconds, not being able to stop a tear from running down and crash against his knuckles like a salty wave against the shore. He was glad no one was sitting next to him. Not that he was afraid to cry, but it never ceased to be embarrassing to do it in public; specially in the middle of strangers without a friendly face around.

Louis was his moonlight.

For most people that wouldn't make much sense, and would call their partners sunshine, because why would someone who you love be related to darkness? But for a night lover, that was exactly what he needed - someone who brought light to every dark, lonely or happy situation, who kept him company and shined unabashedly in front of anyone.
