Her sister-in-law had finally convinced her to go out of the house. She hadn't wanted to, but she did need new clothes so she agreed to go. It was so hot in Phoenix, but for some reason she felt so cold. She was a little worried about going out, she didn't want to be seen pregnant, heaven forbid Lindsey find out in the press that she was pregnant. She wasn't feeling well and they stopped at a store to get something for her upset stomach. As she stood in the line to check out she looked on the magazine stand, nothing really looked interesting until a familiar pair of blue eyes caught her attention. "Lindsey Buckingham weds girlfriend Kristen Messner" was the title of the story. No, no this couldn't be happening. How could he do this to her? She looked down to her stomach, her hands cradling the part of him that she carried and the engagement ring he gave her still on her finger. She ran out of the store and went immediately home. She didn't speak the whole way, but Lori saw the tears running down her face. She went upstairs and packed a bag. She was going to Hawaii. She needed her space. Lori filled her family in while she was upstairs packing. She came down the stairs and told them goodbye and she was gone.
Lindsey saw the magazine. Fuck! He didn't want Stevie to find out this way. He had wanted to tell her, but didn't know how. He didn't really know why he married Kristen. He guessed because she was having his second child and he hadn't heard from Stevie in 3 months. He didn't blame her. He wished she would have just called once, to give him some hope. Of course he didn't know that she had talked to Kristen. He decided to call her house in Phoenix. He had to try before she read the article. He didn't know what else to do. "Hello?" Christopher answered the phone. He was hoping that Stevie would answer but tried to hide his feelings. "Oh, hi Christopher, is Stevie around?" Christopher was pissed. How dare this asshole call his sister's house acting all nonchalant. "No, Lindsey she ran out of the house crying with a bag packed after reading about your fucking wedding in a magazine at the grocery store." Shit! Lindsey thought. "Look man, I mean I know things didn't work out with you and Stevie, but she deserved better than that. That was a really fucked up thing to do to her. She's going through a lot that you have absolutely no idea about and this was the last thing she needed. Maybe you should just leave her alone before you fuck her up any worse." and with that Christopher hung up the phone. Lindsey sat in silence, still reeling from the call. What was she going through that he didn't know about. He hated himself right now. He was still as in love with Stevie as before. What was he going to do now?
Stevie stayed at Mick's house on Maui. She watched the ocean every day. She cried, she journaled. She wrote songs. She thought about Lindsey, "I can see past you, to the white sand." She could get over this. She hoped anyway. She enjoyed her time with her baby. Her stomach was really growing faster than she had expected. It would be alot harder to hide this. But the stress hadn't been good for her. She was still vomiting, she was pale and her face very thin. She had been so ill she'd had to go to the hospital. She didn't want to be seen out in public. She was about 5 months pregnant at this point. She felt huge. She felt alone. She didn't want to be doing this alone. She wanted Lindsey and he was married to someone else, had just had a daughter. It made her want to vomit again. She had an ultrasound and didn't want to go alone, but she went alone as she had gone to every other appointment. If her pregnancy hadn't been a surprise, the second heartbeat on the monitor was. She supposed the fertility drugs had really worked. Stevie was happy, she was having two little girls. Lindsey's little girls. She was going to have to tell him. To face this. She wasn't sure how, but she would go back to LA in about 2 weeks to tell Lindsey and then back home to Phoenix until the twins were born. Her family was very supportive and wanted to start getting the house ready for the twins. Lori wanted to go with her to Lindsey's, but Stevie felt this was something she would have to do on her own. She could do it.
Lindsey was worried. He hadn't heard a word about Stevie in months and then he began to see her picture in the tabloids with headlines like "Stevie Nicks fighting secret illness?" He didn't know if this was the case, but he knew from her pictures she looked really bad. She was pale even for Stevie and looked as if she had lost about 10 pounds. The photos were all of her coming out of doctors offices and one particularly frightening one of her leaving the ER. He gathered from the tabloids that she was in Hawaii. He guessed he couldn't be surprised that was where she had taken refuge. It had always been her place. He couldn't stop obsessing over her and what was going on, about what Christopher had said. Kristen was noticing how distant he was from her and the kids but he was especially cold to her. He loved his kids, but he didn't love her. She knew he married her because Stevie had left and he wasn't thinking straight. She hadn' t really cared, but she saw him staring at her in magazines and was afraid that their new marriage wasn't going to last long. She wasn't going to give him up without a fight though.
