A pounding knock at the door awoke me. I looked at the clock, 3:30 in the morning. THUMP! THUMP! "I'm coming, geez!" I heard Jerry as I run down the stairs just in time to see Jerry open the door. A policeman. "Oh for the love of God." I said furiously, "What did she do now?"

The policemen of New York City knew my family very well. Let's just say Megan's reputation was more than infamous in the force. "Oh, this one's new," said he, almost chuckling, "She wanted me to take you both down to see her." Jerry looked at my confused face for about a second and gave a heavy sigh, "Get your coat, Len."

The night was cold and windy, snow was lightly falling and by this I could tell winter would be staying longer this year. The policeman lit his cigar and smoke filled the air. "So, what is this, the third time?"

"Fourth." I answered sternly. "Wow. Fourth time in two weeks," he took a big whiff, "Must be some new record." We walked up the stairs to the police department. The lights were dimmed slightly while another policeman sat at the front desk, "Guess you brought the kids back, huh, Patrick?" He chuckled.

Patrick, our policeman answered, "Yes sir, could you let us in real quick?"

"Sure, just sign in for me, Jerry."

"Alright, thank you, go on ahead." Patrick led us to the cell where Megan was. Her once sparkling dress soiled with muck. Her hair, once neatly curled, was in a bushy mess. "Megan, your kids are here."

Her closed eyes quickly opened while she jumped from her bed, "Kids! Oh my children! I'm so happy to see you," she exclaimed using a sickly sweet voice we all knew to be fake, while the alcohol in her system also made her words sound slurred. "Patrick, can you leave me with my kids?"

"You've got five minutes." Patrick walked away, shaking his head.

"So--" Megan began to speak but Jerry cut her off.

"What are you in for this time?" He asked sternly.

"Jerry, why can't we have a nice conversation before getting into all that?"

"Why? WHY?! Well, maybe because I don't want to hear another of  your dang stories! Maybe I'd like to sleep for a couple more hours before I go to work, but no! I'm here talking to a drunk and the last thing I wanna do is have a 'nice' conversation with my so called 'mother'." Jerry's face turned red and his ears were fuming. I was almost as dumbfounded as Megan.

Megan crossed her arms and looked the other way. "Well, maybe I won't tell you why I'm here then."

"If that's the case then Len and I will just go home."

"Wait no!" Megan grabbed hold of his collar form the other side of the bars, "I'll tell you!"

"I'm listening."

"Well, it's nothing too serious. I just stole a little bitty ring."

"How much?" Jerry sighed.

"Oh, I don't know. Maybe fifty dollars, but I only did it because Ken said that he wanted to give it to me! He couldn't afford it so he said he'd just borrow it until he could pay for it! That's all, honest!" Jerry and I just stood there silently. I could tell form his face that he didnât believe a word Megan just aid. Jerry's trust in her was never high.

"How much do I need to get you out of here?" He asked coldly.

Megan mumbled, "Twenty bucks."

"TWENTY?! I barely afforded to get you out last time!"

"Well you gotta get me outta here, Jer, who else is gonna--"

"Gonna do what? Clean the house? Pay for your whiskey?" Jerry growled, "I think we got that covered."  With that Jerry grabbed my hand and walked out of the police station, I could still here Megan's persistent yelling and cursing at us for leaving her to rot in prison.

"Jerry," I yelped, letting go of his hand, "You're just gonna leave her there?"

"Why should I get her out? For her to do it again? Not this time Lenny, she needs to learn."

"Well how long do you plan on keeping her there?"

"I don't know maybe a week," Jerry said nonchalantly, "Why do you care? She makes your life miserable anyways."

It was true. She did, but she was still my mother no matter how much I wished she wasnât. But as I started to think about what Jerry said about letting her learn her lesson, I decided maybe some jail time would be good for Megan.

The rest of the way home was quiet, partly because the both of us were tired and partly because it was four in the morning and people were still asleep. Jerry unlocked the door to our home, "Go to bed, Lenny. You have a few more hours."

"What about you?"

"I think I'll just stay up, maybe get to work early, get a few extra bucks." Jerry pointed up to the stairs, "Sleep. Now."

"Yes sir!" I mock-saluting him, laughing. He smiled and slapped my head as he told me to go on up.

KNOCK! KNOCK! I turned to my side to look at the time, 6:30. Oh no! School was going to start in thirty minutes and knowing how fast I could walk, I wouldn't get there in time, and now someone was at my door? This day couldn't be any better. KNOCK! KNOCK

"I'm coming just hold on!" I put on my worn out coat and ran down the stairs.

KNOCK! "If you knock on my door on my door, one more time Iâll punch you in the--" I find a very rich looking women staring down at me.

She looked about forty years old with dark red hair and green eyes, just like Jerry's. Her hat was twice as big as her head with a large feather to match the velvet material. She wore a beautiful long coat that matched her hat and large pearls around her neck. Next to her was man with mustache and a black top hat in a dark coat. "Can I help you, ma'am?" I stuttered.
