We arrived at the ruined bridge and got out. Momo was flying overhead, looking for trouble. I stood with the boys and evaluated the situation. Dean kicked a rock into the ravine as Sam pulled out his phone. I crouched by the edge looking at the break. I focused my power as Dean spoke behind me.
“This is the only road in or out.” He said turning to Sam who was dialing.
“No signal.” Sam said worriedly. Momo swooped down and landed on my shoulder. He spoke in my mind Demons are everywhere mistress, but they art hidden from the noonday sun, where for and why I knowest not, but ‘tis a truth I cannot deny. I nodded and he ruffled his feathers uneasily.
“Rufus was right, demons got this place locked down.” Dean said looking around miserably. I nodded and bit my lip.
“Looks like we’re hiking in.” Sam said resignedly. I laughed out loud. They both looked at me.
“Or, you know, we could fly.” I said with a grin. I pulled off my jacket and my wings burst out. The boys stepped back in surprise. Then Dean grinned. “Grab your bags boys, let’s hunt.” I said with a devilish grin. We geared up and grabbed extra for our bags and I braided Castiel’s feather into my hair. It enhanced my speed and strength so I would need it to carry both boys plus our gear. I grabbed the boys by the scruffs of their shifts and I beat my wings. It’s hard taking flight, and I had relied on will power and magic before.
“Any time now.” Dean said grumpily. I kicked him and let go. I jumped into the air and Momo soared up with me, shouting instructions through the roar of the wind in my ears. I rose up, ever higher, until I stilled, my wings pumping the air keeping me mostly level. I dove down and snagged the boys pulling up and over the ravine. We shot down the winding road with furious speed and got to the town in a minute flat. I dropped the boys and circled a few times, making sure the area was clear before landing between them. I held out my hand and Sam gave me my gun and jacket.
“That was incredible.” He said half way to a laugh. I grinned at him as Momo landed on my shoulder again.
“You guys need to eat more. You weigh next to nothing.” I said, and it was true. It was like carrying a plastic bag with one pencil in it. We readied our guns and walked into town. A song blared through an abandoned car’s radio. I watched our rear while the boys checked the over turned car and abandoned shops. We were silent and wary. Where was everyone? A sprinkler was shooting water across the lawn of a house as we proceeded down the street. Sam reached into the car and turned it off, the music stopping.
The silence was painful, a slight wind ruffling a banner. I could sense people, and fear. Fear cloaked the town. People I knew were here, I could feel them, but I couldn’t quite tell who. We got to a cross road by a church and I pointed at a cherry red Mustang. Dean whistled and I nodded. I wanted this car. I NEEDED this car. It screamed out to me for attention. An electrical line sparked by a garage and I spun around, my shotgun up. I sighed as the wire swung back and forth. We stopped at another car. It was surrounded by a splatter of blood and a baby stroller. I looked at Sam and Dean who were both pale. I tensed, someone was coming.
I slipped a small bottle of holy water out of my pocket and spun around as a gun cocked behind me. I threw the water heedlessly and Ellen gasped as it hit her. I sighed in relief.
“Ellen. Thank God.” I said lowering my gun. She looked at us, her face hard.
“Hello, kids.” She said silkily. She moved a bit closer her gun aimed at Dean’s forehead. He started talking but she splashed his face with Holy Water too and I stifled a giggle. He looked pissed.
“We’re us.” He growled and Ellen led us to the church. Until about two years ago Ellen ran the Roadhouse, a stopping point for travelling hunters with her son and daughter. Jo and I were close, we used to play hunters in the back yard taking turns being monsters and practicing how to kill them. She was always killing me before I decided what I was. She was good like that. Ellen had taught her. I hadn’t heard from either of them in a few weeks. We stepped inside the church over a line of salt and Devil’s trap. Ellen turned to us and pulled Dean into a hug.
