Unbreakable

Chapter Three

The criminal raced down the highway and reached a deserted diner at the edge of town. At least, there won't be any collateral if this gets ugly.

We catch up to him easily, but it seems as though he wanted that to happen. We all stop and form a semi-circle in front of him.

"Why, hello there Aces!" He spits out. "Glad to finally be given your attention!"

So he did want us to catch him. I wonder what his intentions are. Nothing short of criminal I can guarantee.

"Who are you, and what do you want?" I demand.

"You," he states as if it's obvious, but it's not. What does he mean by that?

Suddenly, we're attacked from behind! Robots appear out of nowhere. There are hundreds of them.

"Ambush!" Eagle cries out.

Falcon fights off three robots before rushing to her side. They watch each others' backs and effectively hold off their assailants. Hawk finally reaches me and we take up a similar tactic.

"We need to retreat with the others. Go! I'll be right behind you!" I yell at my partner.

He makes a move and I rush after him. Out of nowhere, I get knocked over. I struggle to get up, but my limbs fail and I pass out.

When I wake up, I'm still in the parking lot of the abandoned diner. My hands are tied behind my back and my head is spinning. My head is ferociously yanked back and I see my friends kneeling in front of me looking absolutely beaten. A knot forms in my stomach. This man was strong to be able to defeat all of us! What does he want?

I hear a menacing chuckle come from above me. I look up and see our enemy looking at me with evil and desire in his eyes. He strokes my hair causing me to shiver.

"You put up a good fight, but in the end I come out on top," he begins. "I am The Mechanic. And now you belong to me." His hand moves to touch my cheek and I flinch.

"Don't touch her you filthy animal!" Hawk growls at him.

"Ha! Well either I touch her, or I hurt you," he threatens.

"No," I let out weakly. My only, and prbably greatest, weakness is my team mates. I can never put them at risk, even if it means sacrificing myself. "No," I say again, shaking my head this time. "You have me, and I'll surrender myself, just as long as you don't hurt them. Actually..."

"Yes?" the Mechanic questions me.

"Please let them go," I practically beg. I look down and pray that he has the decency to free them.

"Alright, darling." He coos at me. "Take them home then release them!" He orders his robots.

"No!"

"We're not leaving you!"

"What are you doing?"

My friends all protest as they get dragged away. I wish they would stop fighting it, it only makes it harder for me to see them go. Hawk gets free and starts fighting again. He only makes it a few steps before he pinned down again.

"I love you, June! Don't you ever forget that. We will come and get you, I promise. Please be okay until you can be rescued!" Hawk tells me before he's yanked away from me.

That is probably the last time I will ever see any of them. My heart hurts more than my head right now. I don't know what I've gotten myself into, but as long as my friends are safe, I can accept anything.

I can't hold it in anymore as I quietly sob as I say a silent goodbye to them.
