5- Kidnapped by Vampires? But it My Time of the Month!
-------------------------------------L
My. Head. Hurts. Ugh. It's probably from the fact that I threw up several times. I hate being a woman. Blinking my eyes tightly to try and clear my vision, I sit up rubbing my temples. I look up to survey my surroundings but am not quite ready for what I see next. Daniel is standing across the room, staring at me.
"What?" I ask him.
"Nothing, just looking at you brings back... Never mind," he tells me.
He's looking at me but his eyes are unfocused as if he's thinking about something. He's so strange, but now is the perfect time to get answers.
"So about what you said before, about me staying here, you were kidding right?" He suddenly becomes very serious.
"Of course not, why would I joke about that?" I open my mouth to argue but something tells me that it wouldn't matter. Fine then, on to the next question. "Who were those guys?"
When I ask this particular question, a small smile creeps to his lips. Since it was the first time I had seen him smile, it catches me off guard.
"They are my... friends," he says slowly.
I look at him questioningly. "Oh. Okay, next question." He comes to sit on my bed and stares at me intensely as if trying to memorize my facial features.
"Can you stop doing that?" I frown at him.
He replies innocently, "What?"
I give him an incredulous look, "The staring. All of you have staring problems now that I think about it."
"They're just...curious," he says, "which can be quite annoying at times."
"What about you? Are you... curious?"
"I'm... relieved," he sighs.
"Relieved? What do you mean?" My eyebrows furrow with confusion.
He really does not make sense.
"I'm glad I'm able to see you after all these years."
My eyebrows furrow in frustration. "You're really confusing me now," I say, "I don't even know who you are."
"I suppose you wouldn't. It's been so many years, 15 to be exact."
"15 years ago?" I ask.
"Yes, the year the tornado that hit close to here." His eyes go glassy again and his face hardens into an unreadable mask.
"The day is still as clear to me as if it were yesterday. The sirens began to sound while we were playing in the backyard. You were barely even a toddler at the time. Mom and Dad had me babysit while they were in the city, so I took you in the house when I heard the alarm. Since we didn't have a storm shelter yet, the bathroom was the only place where our family could take shelter and by then the house had already started shaking from the force of the wind. Our power went out and I told you to stay put while I searched for a flashlight. I was young and stupid. That's when it hit: the F-4 tornado that destroyed almost the entire town. Our house didn't stand a chance. I yelled your name but the scream of the wind covered up my voice. The next thing I know, I'm being pulled out of the rubble by a man. We looked around for you but then he said it was too late. After he took me away, I didn't come back to that place for many years. I was an outcast to society and could have never come back to Mom and Dad. They looked for me and you in the rubble when they came back and discovered what had happened. He told me you were dead. He said he saw your body. I was naive enough to believe him, and after what he did to me, I just couldn't have returned home."
I sit there speechless. "So what you're saying is that you're my...my-," I stutter, trying to get the words out.
He acts like he hasn't heard me.
"I remember the first time I saw you after I thought you were dead," he continues, "I had met up with David and our expeditions for the day had brought us into town. We were sitting at the park talking when a group of girls passed by. At first I didn't think anything of it. But then I felt something; a gentle tug in the direction of the group. Looking up, my conversation with David ended immediately. David also saw who I was staring at. When I saw you, I just knew. David figured out later that the man had lied to me so I went back and told him I was leaving. He didn't care for that much, but I still got away." A bitter smile appears on his face as he finishes his monologue, giving off a terrifying air around him.
"Daniel," I say, snapping him out of whatever he had been thinking. "What you're saying is that-"
"Yes, Lilly, I'm your brother."
