Chapter 5
I pulled out the two cardboard boxes and unpacked my clothes, survival kit and my pointless bikini. After what seemed like forever, I finally reached my iPod and its chargers. I noticed someone was looking down at me.
“That’s an iPod ain’t it?” said Zigzag from above. He took a step back, his blue eyes wide, as I turned to look up.
“Oh yeah, yeah it is,” I replied, “Do you have one?”
“Nope, family can’t afford one.” He sulked giving me the same freaked out expression. I stood up and put my hand on his shoulder and showed the IPod to him. He shuddered under my touch but was more interested in the IPod. He picked it up with two fingers and examined it.
“Well, you can use mine whenever you want okay?”
“Really?”
“Really, really!” I giggled
“You’re real nice Kathlyn.”
“Just call me Kat, it’s much easier.”
“Oh right, okay. Just call me Zig, or Ziggy if you want to.” He smiled.
“Ha-ha, okay then Ziggy. Where’s everyone gone to?” I just noticed we were the only two in the tent. Zig put the IPod back into the cardboard box.
“Um, since you were unpacking you didn’t notice the bell call for dinner. So everyone left, but I offered to wait for you. But, since you’re done do you want to eat?” He motioned to the entrance of the tent.
“Well if you call the food edible then I guess yes!”
“It’s not really edible except the bread, but you might as well see for yourself.”
We trudged out of the tent. It was getting dark and a few lights were coming on. Turning round a corner I saw one of the bigger cabins labeled ‘Mess Hall’. Lots of voices poured out of it. When we entered, all the commotion seemed to quiet down a bit. Zigzag walked over to a blackened silver stand with different mush served by other juveniles with hairnets. I quickly followed behind him, trying to hide behind his tallness. He took a brown tray and slid it on the edge of the stand. I did the same. As I was getting mush dumped on my plate the loud talking slowly resumed. I could pick out some conversations. Conversations about me.
"What the hell is it?" I whispered to Zig. The mush was a red and wobbly, a clear red juice spreading out of it and onto the rest of the plate.
"That is your dinner." He whispered back.
"I don’t think anything is edible here-Zig?” He had disappeared.
I turned around and looked for him and a place to sit. I searched for the D-Tent boys but I couldn’t see them. Then a couple of arms stuck out of the mass of orange and waved. I swiftly made my way over to them.
“Here Kat this is your spot.” Said Zigzag as he slid over to the left and I sat down between him and Caveman, across from Squid.
"So, what did yah do to get in here, since this is a boy camp and all?" Squid asked
"Hotwired a car, crashed into a pole, wrecked it completely. The judge thought I was too much of a disruptive pyromaniac for a girl’s correctional camp… and that other reason that Pendanski said. So, here I am." I took out my lighter I had in my pocket and flipped it in my hand to make a point. "But, that wasn't my only offense. I shoplifted a lot, too. But I got caught; my accomplice and best friend Charlie was a bit luckier. She is a bit innocent anyways, so I’m glad she didn’t. Charlie actually has a life."
