"Liesel I am really sorry" Lucas said. His eyes were filled with sadness. He sat beside Liesel. After all, Liesel looked older. She already looked like a teenager, even though she was still fourteen. Lucas looked older thatn her, but they both looked like teenagers already.
"You don't have to be sorry" she answered with a cold tone.
"Yes I do because-" he smiled to Liesel, and Liesel turned to him. She saw his smile, and looked at her shoes "Because I am worried about you" Liesel give him a shy smile. << What about a kiss, Saumensch?>> and she stopped smiling. Also, I turned to see Rudy, and he wasn't smiling anymore.
"I can't believe she is stopping, because of me" he said, looking at Liesel with sadness.
"She loves you" I answered.
"I love her to, but she has the right to love someone else". I looked back at Liesel. Liesel looked at her shoes, with disappointment.
"What's wrong, Liesel?" Lucas asked.
"I, umm, I- I don't know what to say" Lucas laughed.
"You don't have to say anything" Lucas stood up. "Come on let's go" Lucas helped Liesel up, and in the middle of the night, they both walked back to their houses.

"No, I mean, I didn't throw a Book exactly to her face, but because of her reaction, I guess she was pretty upset" Liesel smiled and laughed.
"For the nails of Christ, Lucas, you are so insane!" Lucas smirked.
"That is the thing of being me, every girl falls for me"
"Calm down Saurkel, you still don't know what I did" Liesel answered, eating her bread. They were sitting in the bridge of the Amper river.
"I shouted at an important man, who was a goddamn Saurkel with me, by the way"
"What did he do to you to make you sooo mad"
"Well, he mentioned some stupid things about Rudy and my parents"
"I'll never do that" Lucas laughed.
"I know you won't" Liesel smiled "So I shouted with all the voice I have, and he left pretty upset" they laughed.
"And now you are telling me that I'm insane?"
"Yes" she laughed. Lucas grabbed an apple and started eating. "You know, I never talked to someone to much, not the way I talk to you" Liesel said.
"Really? You seemed like a talking person" Lucas answered, with sarcasm.
"Hey, I was to shy when I was a kid". Liesel finished her bread, and cleaned her gray dress, and her coat.
"Wow, I can't believe Rudy's birthday is tomorrow" Liesel said.
"And you are doing anything? I mean, in memorial"
"Yeah, I'll give him a present"
"Give him a book" Liesel laughed.
"Never in a million years, he would like, humm, a suit"
"A suit? Are you serious?"
"Yes, his dad, you know?"
"Oh right" Lucas said with apple in his mouth.
"Shut up and finish your apple" Liesel said laughing, and grabbing more food.
"It has been 2 months Liesel" Lucas said, more in a serious tone.
"I know"
"And how you are doing?" Liesel swung her legs back and forth in the bridge.
"Well, I guess I'm doing okay"
"Just okay?" Liesel nodded. She turned down to the river, and saw a book floating in it.
"Lucas, a book" Mein Kampf, she thought, Max
"Yeah, I know, you have one beside you"
"No! I mean in the river!" Liesel got down from the bridge and ran to the river. She dove in until the cold water was touching her waist. Lucas ran down to.
"Liesel! There is nothing over there!"
"No! There it is!" A red book was floating and Liesel went further.
"LIESEL, STOP! You can't swim!" Lucas shouted, worried. Liesel didn't turn and she continued. "FOR GOD'S SAKE! LIESEL STOP!" Liesel went further until the water was touching her neck. Lucas left his aple in the grass and dove in. He followed Liesel, but the water was touching already her chin.
"Liesel, please stop" Lucas insisted. He ran behing her, and before the water was already over Liesel's forehead, Lucas carried her out of the water.
"Lucas! The book!"
"Liesel, there is no book"
"No! It is really there! And it is red and-" Liesel stopped talking and saw a blonde boy getting out of the water with the book in hand.
"What about a kiss, Saumensch?" And he disappeared.
"It can't be" Liesel said. Lucas looked at her with sweetness.
" So you are doing okay now?" Liesel shook her head in disapproval. Lucas took out his coat and put it around Liesel's shoulders.
"Don't ever do that again. I'll die if you do that" Lucas said, with his eyes full of worry.
"I saw him"
"Liesel this is getting out of control"
" I know" she looked down, and Lucas hugged her.
"I know it is difficult, but someday you will have to get over it, you know?" Liesel nodded.
"But, why do you are worried about me?" Liesel asked.
"Because I love you" Lucas smiled to her.
"Lucas, I, umm, I'm-" Lucas grimaced.
"Still in love with Rudy, I understand, no worries" Lucas started to go away.
"No Lucas, no, please stop"
"I'm fine Liesel, I'm fine, just tell me when does Rudy's memorial starts because I'll like to be there with you" he walked away to his house, and the book thief sat in the grass.
"I love you to, Lucas" she whispered.

There comes a time when the spirits ( if you want to call them like that ) stop watching people. Because of disappointment or sadness because they can't be with them. Rudy had both. He had disappointment on Liesel, for not loving someone else, and sadness because he couldn't be with his Saumensch, and Rudy sat next to his mother, witn sadness.
