Liesel put on her yellow dress again, for Rudy's birthday. Ilsa told her someone was coming for Rudy's memorial. Liesel raised an eyebrow.
"Who?"
"Someone called Alex" Liesel raised both eyebrows.
"Alex Steiner is coming?"
"Yes" Liesel ran outside of the house and ran to Himmel Street. A man was standing in front of his shop, with a key in hand, and opened it slowly. Liesel followed. She entered to the shop behind Alex Steiner.
"Hey! Liesel! How are you?" Alex said, with a but of happiness.
"Great, thanks" Liesel smiled to him. Alex smiled back.
"I'm re-opening the shop" he said
"Great idea!" Liesel smiled even more. Alex smiled to him.
"Why don't I go with you back home, until it is the memorial. I think you should stay home, before it" Liesel nodded. They walked back to Grande Street, and sat down in the stairs outside de 8 of Grande Street.
""I should have let Rudy to go to that school" Alex Steiner told Liesel, with complete sadness. Liesel just looked at her shoes.
"Umm, I kissed him, when he was already dead, but I kissed him, in the lips" Alex Steiner smiled with tears in his cheeks.
"I'm glad to hear it from you, Liesel" Liesel smiled to. "He was always telling us that he wanted a kiss from you" Liesel laughed with tears in her eyes.
"Well, I should keep going" Alex said, standing up. "But before, would you like to work with me in the shop?"
"Of course!" They hugged and Alex Steiner walked away, with his hands in his pockets, back to Himmel Street.

"They were like my family" Liesel said in front of them "They were my sisters and brothers to me, and I was always welcomed in their home. I miss them, and I will always remember them as my family. But, I will always remember Rudy Steiner as my best friend" Tears "As the good kid he was, and as a good kid he is. He loved me, and I love him, and I'm never forgetting the lemon-haired boy, always smiling" Everyone was captivated by Liesel's speech " always chasing his dream, even though it was to become Jesse Owens" everyone laughed, remembering the kid with coal in his face "and I will always, ALWAYS, have him in my heart". Claps. Tears. Laughs. Screams. Liesel got back to her place, and Alex Steiner put a hand oh her shoulder, and they both smiled. She turned around the crowd. There was no smokey hair around. But he promised, she thought. And she looked at her feet.

When the ceremony was over, and Liesel saw, at the distance, a smokey hair going away.
"Lucas!" He turned, but turned away. "LUCAS!" She ran after him and chased him. "I have the best present for Rudy"
"Great, good to know" he continued walking.
"Don't want to know what it is?" Lucas turned and gave her a look of despair.
"Maybe later" and Lucas walked away. Liesel stared at his back for minutes.
"The present for him is remembering" she said, with sadness, to herself.

It was Liesel's birthday. She was getting fifteen. Lucas didn't talk to her, for weeks since Rudy's birthday. She had been working with Alex Steiner in his shop.
At school, she sat alone. No one talked to her. Again to 0. When school was over she started to go to Alex Steiner's shop, but someone shouted at her. She was crossing Amper river's bridge.
"LIESE! WAIT!" A boy with smokey hair and blue eyes was following her. She stopped. The boy had a box in his hand. "I'm sorry, Liesel, I was a completely asshole to you, and I'm so sorry, and happy birthday" the girl smiled and took the box.
"Thank you" She opened the box and found a beautiful blue book, with silver letters, that said Der große Fluss.: The Great River.
"It is beautiful, Lucas, thank you" Lucas smiled, and the book thief put the book back into the box.
"Lucas, I also wanted to say that I-" he didn't let Liesel finish. He kissed her. Lucas kissed Liesel, in the lips. I turned and I saw Rudy smiling again.
"I'm proud of you, Saumensch" Rudy said, with happiness.
"I wanted to say that I love you Lucas" and they both smiled.
