"I can explain"

Ava
"What the fuck!" My dad yells at me when we get home. I put my hands up in surrender.

"Get on the floor and take your shirt off" he says calmly.  I hesitate before he screams at me to do it. I get down on my knees and take my shirt off. I goes to his room and gets a whip. I try to beg him not to but nothing comes out. He cracks the whip once to scare me before he starts to whip me. I scream and cry as the whip breaks my skin.

We get to the Dodge house and go up to the door. My dad knocks and Mrs. Dodge answers the door and lets us in.

"Ava, Cason and Cassidy are upstairs. Why don't you go hang out with them" she suggests.

"I'm not sure. She's not very good with people" my dad says.

"We have some things to discuss, Lucas"

"Fine. Go ahead, Ava" he says. I nod once and go upstairs. I hear talking from one of the rooms and knock on the door.

"Come in" someone says. I open the door and see Cassidy and Cason sitting around the room and talking. Cason is sitting on what is probably his bed and Cassidy is sitting in a black bean bag chair.

"Hey, Ava!" Cassidy says. She gets up and hugs me. I give her a small smile in return.

"Hey, Ava" Cason smiles. I awkwardly wave.

"You can sit in that chair if you want" she says pointing at a chair in front of a desk. I sit down.

"So, are you deaf or mute?" she asks. I hold up 2 fingers.

"Mute?" Cason asks. I nod.

"Is it by choice?" Cass asks. I shake my head no.

"What happened?" Cason asks. I shake my head no.

"Do you know sign language?" he asks. I shake my head again.

"You should learn. It would help you communicate better" he says. I grab a piece of paper and a pen. I write on it then give it to Cason.

"'I would but I have no way to learn' oh, I could teach you. Cass and I are fluent" he says. I smile and nod.

"Sweet lessons will start tomorrow"

"I've gotta go the bathroom. I'll be right back" Cass says and leaves. I look around his desk and see something under a stack of papers. I move the papers and see a gun. I grab it and slowly turn around to show Cason. I look at him with a questioning expression. He panics and grabs the gun. He throws it under his pillow and turns back to face me.

"I can explain that" he says quickly. I give him an 'I'm waiting' look.

"Well...um....you see.......I'm uh......holding it for a friend" he stammers. He can tell I don't believe him.

"It's for protection" he says hesitantly. I look at him with an expression that shows I want to know more.

"I'm in a gang, okay?" He tells me. I look down and step back

"You weren't supposed to find out. I'm sorry. Don't be afraid of me. Please" he begs and starts walking to me. I give him a scared look and he backs away

"Hey guys! What did I miss?" Cassidy asks. A lot.
