I was in a daze sitting in the back of the class, in my old school back in North Carolina. I had Headphones on and the calming sound of my favorite song, Roar by Katy Perry was keeping me in my right mind.
I watched as the crazy reckless kids threw paperballs at each other. They were all smiling and laughing. Everyone acted as if I wasn't there and seemed happy. The scenery then changed and I was still seated in a desk with headphones on, but the desk was placed in the middle of a road. My father stood down the road and was smiling at me. He then began shouting at me causing me to start trying to take the headphones off but they were stuck. I felt my face burning hot as I began to get nervous.
"Dad! Help me!" I shouted.
As my father bolted towards me the song stopped and I could finally hear.
"WAKE UP!" he shouted as a bullet went straight through the center of his head.....I looked down at my hands and I was holding the gun.....
***************
I awoke from my sleep hollering and crying. Diego burst through the door in black basketball shorts and a black shirt.
"Cassie!" He shouted as he grabbed me and held me in his arms trying to calm me down.
"I killed him, I killed my dad." I sobbed.
"Shh, no you didn't." Diego held me tightly as he attempted to hush me and calm me down. "Its okay."
-
I sat on the counter drinking a cup of milk as Diego sat at the kitchen table.
"So what happened?" He cautiously asked me.
"I had a dream." I slowly began as I stared at the wooden floor. "I was in a classroom at first and it was kids at my school, the old one back in North Carolina, throwing paper balls and I had headphones on no one was paying attention to me, and then the scene changed." I began to choke up a bit.
"And what happened?" Diego urged me to continue.
"I was still in the desk but I was in the middle of a street and I saw my dad and he was smiling at first." I took my eyes from the floor and allowed them to focus on Diego's green ones. "But then he started yelling and the headphones were like they were super glued to my head and I began to panic. I asked for help and he came running, and when I could finally hear him he was shouting wake up and I shot him in the head."
There was a long silence between us. The house felt unsettling and the tension between us felt awkward, but nothing broke the stare between us. I began to feel feelings that I hadn't felt in a long time for Diego. The whole time I was telling him about the dream he was giving me an understanding expression.
He understood me....
"To get your mind off of things I think I came up with the greatest fucking idea on the planet." Diego got up from the table and smiled a bit as he clasped his hands together.
"And that is?" I said as I ran my fingers through my hair.
"I found an old polaroid in my bag last night and I was thinking you could model for me." Diego suggested.
"Since when have you been into photography?" I laughed.
"Its been my thing for a while now." He shrugged, "so will you do it?"
"Sure." I hopped off the counter and began walking out of the kitchen, "let's do this."
-
Diego made me change out of my PJ's and made me put on a plaid green, yellow and red school girl type of skirt, with a yellow crop top, and some brown goddess sandals.
"Diego I'm not sure about this outfit, I look stupid." I whined.
"No you don't, you look fine."
"Stop." I nudged him as I began to laugh.
We stood in the front yard under the big oak tree, I positioned myself with my back against the tree with one foot propped up and gave a smile. Diego snapped a few pictures.
"You should turn to the side and tilt your head and give off more of a fierce expression." He critiqued and I did as I was told.
"Okay I'm tired of smiling you perfectionist." I joked after a good 30 minutes.
"C'mon it's not that hard." Diego groaned.
"Oh really, you do it then." I grabbed the poloroid out of his hands and made him get in front of the tree.
"Fine." He shrugged and began doing a few poses.
After a while we started getting goofy with it and began taking silly shots and even capturing a good one with us together.
We laid in the grass staring up at the sunset. We had been taking pictures of each other all day. We made the best out of nothing. Diego had been a very good friend lately and turned out to be someone who I could relate to and spend a bunch of time with.
"Okay so today has been I don't know, perfect." I laughed.
"Same over here." Diego waved his hand up lazily then dropped it back down on his chest.
"I wonder what all of my friends are doing right now." I sighed as I stared up at the sky.
"I wonder what we're gonna eat tonight." Diego huffed, "Cause I'm hungry as hell."
"Let's go inside then." I laughed as I got up and helped Diego up as well.
-
We were once again in my room sitting in my reading nook eating nachos that I had made.
"Bro yo freaking head look like this chip." Diego joked.
"Shut the fuck up you fucking lizard." I said as we both began to burst into laughter.
"Thank you for making my summer less shitty." Diego nudged me.
"Hats off for you sir." I smiled.
"I'm serious, at first I thought moving here was a big mistake but then I met you and everything got so much better."
He grabbed my hand and kissed it. I didn't do anything about it, but the next part was all on me. I placed my other hand on his cheek and leaned in for a kiss.
The door to my room burst opened revealing a shocked Candy and my mother.
We were in trouble......
